Vikings agreed to terms with QB Josh Freeman, formerly of the Bucs, on a one-year contract.
So much for the Bills "intensifying their pursuit" of the wayward signal caller. It's an odd fit for both, though whatever the money is, it was obviously right for Freeman. As for the Vikings, they're getting a quarterback who's basically on the same level as supposed starter Christian Ponder and experienced backup Matt Cassel. The roster wouldn't seem to be big enough for the three of them, though there's no immediate reason to believe the Vikes will be cutting ties with either Ponder or Cassel. Perhaps Ponder (ribs) will be sent to injured reserve, but it's unlikely. With Ponder sidelined, Cassel should start in Week 6, and be on a quick hook. Freeman isn't worth a fantasy flier outside of deeper two-quarterback leagues.
When the vikings drafted ponder so early it was because he was supposed to be a mobile QB and be NFL ready from the system he came from. The biggest hit against him was that he did not have a strong arm by any means. Josh Freeman on the other hand was coming out of college very raw with a lot to learn, but had a rocket for an arm. The vikings are probably looking at it as if this is just a fresh start for freeman and if he can learn more in Min then he did in tampa, then he will be a successful qb. For the vikings they really do not have a lot they can lose here, it is probably just a one year contract, so if he fits they resign him if he doesnt they let him walk. I believe for them this is a good signing, because yes cassel won them a game but he is very limited in what he can do ask the chief that went 2-14 with him that are now 5-0, this signing is not as much as an odd fit as this article makes it sound let it play out and we will see what happens next.
Hudler- I pretty much agree. Frazier and Spielman don't have 3 more years to draft their next franchise QB and wait for him to mature. They know Ponder and Cassel are not the answer. They are not risking much by taking a flyer on Freeman. Will be interesting to see whether the 2010 version of freeman shows up or the current version.
