The Fire Sale - Week 2 fantasysharks.com Tue 9/10/13 9:06 AM8 Comments

Ah, Week 1 is in the books. You know what I took away from Week 1? I'm firing on all cylinders this year. Last season I was kind of dealing with health issues in the summer and it was screwing with my fantasy radar but not this year. I'm really on top of my game in 2013. I started out blasting in all of my leagues, which was a pleasant turnaround from last year when I went 0-5 in the first week. So I'm feeling pretty good. We'll see how long that lasts. Usually when I'm in a good mood bad things tend to happen and it doesn't last very long. Oh well, if you're getting your car serviced or have 20 minutes of your life you don't want back, I have some fantasy advice for you. Now on with The Fire Sale... Going Up Joique Bell , Lions -- Bell is a player I snatched up in my leagues last year and he's someone who keeps getting better every time I see him. I had Reggie Bush rated very high in PPR formats and you saw why in Week 1. Bush will be an absolute machine in the Lions' offense if he stays healthy. However, if something happens to Bush (he's already dealing with a couple of injuries), they have another fantasy stud waiting in the wings with Bell. This kid can really play. The best part about Bell is he has fantasy value even if Bush is healthy. Bell scored two short touchdowns on Sunday and caught five passes for 67 yards. Heck, that's a much better fantasy day than most of the running backs we drafted in the first three rounds. I have to hand it to ASL's The Machine software system I'm trying out this year. They've had Bell highly rated all summer long and had him as the top free agent in my leagues where he wasn't drafted. I liked Bell last year and as a handcuff to Bush this season but was afraid his overall fantasy value would be limited in 2013. I was wrong. Bell should be one of your top waiver wire priorities this week. He has fantasy value regardless of Bush's status in PPR formats. Then if Bush is ever sidelined for an extended period of time, owners will have a potential PPR machine on their hands with Bell. Think about it, this guy caught 52 balls last year while splitting time. Imagine what Bell can do if he got most of the touches? If you need a running back off the waiver wire, Bell should be at the top of your wish list. Marlon Brown , WR Baltimore -- I like the cut of this guy's jib. I still have no idea what the heck that means but I like to throw out that phrase whenever possible. It came to me when watching the Ravens/Broncos game, Baltimore must think it's 2007. If a team is going to toss Dallas Clark and Brandon Stokley out there, why not give Torry Holt a call and see if he's interested in making a comeback, too? The Ravens are in desperate need of pass catchers right now. Other than Torrey Smith , they simply don't have any. No, I don't count 1-yard passes to Ray Rice as offense. That may help out your fantasy team but it does nothing in the real world. The bottom line is Ed Dickson still can't catch, Jacoby Jones is always going to be Jacoby Jones (average) and the two former Colts are old. Now with Jones out for at least a month there's an opportunity for a guy to emerge and be a fantasy factor at receiver in Baltimore. Brown looks like the guy who is going to step up. Defenses are going to bracket Smith all season, so someone else will need to step up and help Joe Flacco . I see very few candidates to fill that role right now other than Brown. I like him to develop into a solid fantasy receiver as the year goes on and he develops more chemistry with Flacco. I advise adding Brown if you are looking for a receiver with some upside. Julian Edelman , WR New England -- I actually drafted Edelman in two of my leagues. I took a shot on him late with the thinking being Tom Brady likes to throw to guys he can trust. I didn't think for one second that when the season started Brady was going to be throwing to Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce , while Edelman sat on the bench. It wasn't surprising when Edelman didn't play much in the preseason because the Pats wanted Brady to get work in with all his new receivers. However, much like Peyton Manning , once the bullets are flying for real, Brady looks for receivers he knows will be in the right spot. Not Zach Sudfeld and undrafted rookies. Edelman will be a hot pickup this week and he should be because he has fantasy value, especially in PPR formats. The good news is Edelman should produce solid numbers most weeks. Also, Danny Amendola is one of the more fragile players in the NFL and he's already dealing with a groin injury, so Edelman is a step away from being Brady's No. 1 receiver. The bad news is the only guy more fragile than Amendola is Edelman, who is always hurt himself. Edelman won't score two touchdowns every week but he'll gobble up a bunch of those short passes from Brady. He's a great add in PPR leagues. Andre Roberts , WR Arizona -- Roberts is one of the most underrated receivers in the NFL. This guy runs great routes, has great hands and doesn't get any recognition. Think about what Roberts did last year. He caught 64 passes for 759 yards and five scores with me basically throwing him the ball. Roberts had a big first week catching eight passes for 97 yards and I noticed even in the preseason that he was building a nice chemistry with Carson Palmer . Throughout his career Palmer always has that possession receiver he likes to throw to. In Cincinnati it was T.J. Houshmandzadeh . In Oakland it was tight end Brandon Myers . In Arizona that guy looks like it will be Roberts. Roberts was kind of the forgotten man with everyone so excited about Larry Fitzgerald a nd Michael Floyd this summer, so he's still available in a lot of leagues. If he was on my waiver wire, I would go after him. Roberts caught 64 balls in that dysfunctional offense last year, he should snag 75 passes playing in Bruce Arians' three-receiver set for fun. I would make Roberts a waiver priority this week. Jared Cook , TE St. Louis -- I'm in five leagues and Cook is my starting tight end in every one of them. I took this chance for two reasons. One, I felt like Cook was going to be a top-5 fantasy tight end this year. Two, Chris Palmer is arguably the worst offensive coordinator in the history of the NFL. No player has been underutilized more over the last two years than Cook. Palmer is such a bad coordinator that he makes every other offensive coach I criticize in this column look like a genius. Did you see the play where Cook fumbled just before he scored? He looked like an Olympic sprinter running down the field but one that weighs 250 pounds. Cook is one of the most physically gifted tight ends in the NFL and Palmer didn't do anything to get him involved in the offense at Tennessee. That's a perfect example of what can happen to a player when a bad offensive playcaller gets a hold of him. If you think that's a one game thing from Cook, it's not. The guy is a beast. Sure, he won't score 30 fantasy points every week but Brian Schottenheimer is going to target his tight end over 100 times this season. Heck, he did it with Dustin Keller , you don't think he's going to do it with this monster? Cook may still be available on some waiver wires. If he is you should sell your spouse to get him. If someone in your league is thinking of selling high on him, buy high. Cook will dominate all year long. I staked my entire fantasy tight end position on him and after one week, he delivered big-time. Finally, one of my cockeyed predictions paid off. Julius Thomas , TE, Denver -- I try not to waste time here talking about the one or two guys every other column is jamming down your throat in a particular week. I mean Thomas is big, fast, he looks like a young Antonio Gates and he has Peyton Manning t hrowing him the ball. If you want more analysis than that, just click on any other fantasy column written this week and I'm sure you'll find it. Coming Down Trent Richardson , RB Cleveland -- I want to talk about a couple of things here. First of all, I'm a Richardson fan and I own him in a couple of leagues. I also thought since March that Cleveland would be one the surprise offenses in the NFL this year. I don't put much stock in the preseason but it looked as if the Browns were, at the very least, moving in the right direction. Then the lights came on for real and it all came crashing down. I don't want to overreact to one week but when we look at a team like Cleveland, it's hard not to be alarmed by what we saw against Miami. We at least want to see something that looks like progress from last season but instead it was the same miserable offense filled with turnovers, sacks and punts. Brandon Weeden looked dreadful. The offensive line couldn't block anyone. The receivers couldn't get open. Richardson got hammered by multiple defenders as soon as he touched the ball. The only real bright spot on Sunday for the Browns was tight end Jordan Cameron . Again, I love everything about Richardson and he'll have better fantasy days but on the other hand, some weeks he's going to be at the mercy of his go-nowhere offense. I mean this team is throwing to Tori Gurley and Josh Cooper for cryin' out loud. Speaking of guys named Gurley, Georgia running back Todd Gurley is the next Adrian Peterson and you can take that to the bank. If you think I compare people in college to Peterson a lot, Gurley is the first back ever. The kid is an absolute monster. And what's going on with the playcalling in Cleveland? The Browns called 53 passes and 13 runs in a game that was close the entire way. That's unacceptable when Richardson is your team's running back. Richardson is a stud, but in order for him to have success he needs a much better effort out of his line and coaching staff than he got on Sunday. I say stick with him because I believe Rob Chudzinski is a good coach, but other than Jacksonville,...
