This is one of the more surprising transactions on cutdown day, as the Chiefs are thin at running back after losing Spencer Ware (knee) for the season. The team may end up bring Spiller back after Week 1 -- a common move used with veterans to avoid guaranteeing a portion of their contracts. It's also possible the Chiefs simply prefer to comb the waiver wire or free agency for other options for the No. 3 running back role.
