Rookie Review - Week 4 fantasysharks.com Wed 9/25/13 1:00 PM

Quarterbacks Geno Smith -- In a battle between the top-2 rookie quarterbacks this week you would have to announce that Geno Smith bested E.J. Manuel. Truth be told, I am in shock that this occurred. Smith had a decent game with a line of 16-29-331-2-2 and he also rushed four times for 14 yards and another TD. Smith had two receivers go over the 100-yd mark and threw the game winning TD to Santonio Holmes. Yes, that Santonio Holmes. This was against a team that isn't very good against the pass, but it is still somewhat of an achievement for him. He also did not get sacked for the first time this year. If, and that's a big if, he can play like that again he will get your attention. E.J. Manuel -- I am still surprised (and disappointed) that E.J. is not running with the ball more. He has the speed to beat defenders around the corners. E.J.'s numbers were 19-42-243 with a TD and he rushed six times for 40 yards. His throws were all over the place as he was under a lot of pressure from the Jets. His offensive line is horrible and he suffered eight sacks. They need to let him use his speed more. Manuel needs to take more control of the situation and learn to create plays. He may need to if C.J. Spiller isn't available this week, especially against Baltimore. Running Backs Eddie Lacy -- We all know that Lacy was out this week with a concussion. What you may not no is that the No. 2 and 3 running backs both got hurt this week. Thank goodness for you cheesehead lovers out there that they have a bye this week. It sounds like Lacy should be good to go after the bye. Giovoni Bernard -- Is it finally happening? For the first time this year, the Bengals actually had Bernard on the field more the BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Bernard responded with 10 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown to go with four catches for 49 yards. He outgained the "Law Firm" by 21 yards rushing on the same number of carries and he also had four catches compared to zero for Green-Ellis. Oh yeah, BenJarvus also fumbled. For the year Giovoni is averaging 5.0 yards per carry compared to 2.8 for Green-Ellis. I think you will see more use of Bernard going further. Like I said before, get him if you can!! Montee Ball -- Denver is a scoring machine; they may set the NFL record this year for most points. The Broncos always build up a big lead and try and let the running backs kill the clock. This should be right up Ball's alley. Ball did have a better showing this week with 11 carries for 61 yards, but he fumbled for the 2nd straight week. If Denver ever gets into a close game, do you think they would trust him with the rock? Until he can protect the ball better and become a better pass protector he will not offer very much for your team. Johnathan Franklin -- Johnathan finally made it onto the field this week, and he looked pretty good rushing 13 times for 103 yards with a TD with a fumble along with three receptions for 23 yards. Oh-oh, do we have a possible RBBC brewing? No!! As it so happens, Franklin went down with an injury. This may build some confidence for later in his career, but with the bye week and Eddie Lacy returning, Franklin can recover and come back at his own pace. Running Backs (con't) Andre Ellington -- Not much happening in an offense when your best player gets hurt. With Larry Fitzgerald hurting, New Orleans was given a chance to load up the box and stop the run. Ellington only had three carries for 19 yards along with three catches for 36 yards. It sounds like Fitzgerald will be better for the next game, which will make everybody else better. Khiry Robinson -- New to the list, Robinson saw some use this week. He had four carries for 38 yards in the Saints' blowout win over Arizona. There have been conflicting reports about the status of Mark Ingram with the Saints. If he is traded, Robinson should have your attention in this high-powered offense. Benny Cunningham -- Another new guy. The Rams were not given much of a chance to run in this game because it was ugly early, but when they did it was with Richardson and Pead leading the way. Richardson went down right away with an injury and Pead only managed 20 yards on six carries. Enter Cunningham, who had four carriers for 16 yards and one catch for six yards. Is this the start of something? Knile Davis -- Davis had a very similar look to Jamaal Charles, except for the fumbling problems from his past. Davis finally got in some game time and had six carriers for 25 yards. Wide Receiver Tavon Austin -- It is really hard sometimes to come up with something positive to say when you get blown out 31-7. Dallas was up 24-0 and the Rams had no offense what-so-ever. Austin did end up with two catches for 22 yards, but that was all long after we all knew the outcome. The Rams will have better days, but it may not be this week. They play a 49ers team that is sure to be fired up after two bad loses. DeAndre Hopkins -- The Texans had a bad day in Baltimore. They couldn't run, they gave up two defensive touchdowns, and their top wide-out was injured. Hopkins still had an OK day with six catches for 60 yards. The Texans and Hopkins will have better days, count on that. DeAndre is still a WR3 on your roster. If Andre Johnson remains hurt, he will move up due to an increase in targets. Marlon Brown --To put it bluntly, Baltimore knows how to play with a lead. Baltimore got a defensive and special teams touchdown early and said "OK, lets run the ball." And run it they did. Baltimore ran the ball over 30 times in this contest. When that happens, the passing game takes a back seat. Brown only had two catches for six yards. With the news of another incident with Jacoby Jones, Brown will probably keep the No. 2 WR job all year. If he is still available, he is worth a look. Kenbrell Thompkins --Finally!! After being the talk of training camp and then being a total bust in the first two weeks of the season we have signs of life. Thompkins had three catches for 41 yards and two touchdowns. Maybe all of the yelling from Tom Brady did some good. With Amendola out for a while yet, you will still want him. If he is available, pick him up. Aaron Dobson -- Another sign of life!! It seems like the light may hive finally turned on for Aaron as he had seven catches for 52 yards on 10 targets. Brady also missed him for a wide open touchdown. This is the kid that everybody loved from the draft. His stock arrow is pointing up. Wide Receiver (con't) Robert Woods --You really can't blame this week's poor showing on Woods. His quarterback was under a lot of pressure all day. Robert only had two catches for 35 yards. Just remember, with rookies you will have growing pains. He has the talent needed to make it in the NFL. Keep him on your watch list. Cordarrelle Patterson --How loud does one have to be in order to be heard? The Vikings fans are very frustrated with the play of quarterback Christian Ponder. Once again, he looked terrible. How is it that when you are down in the last minute of the game you can't even attempt a pass of over 10 yards? Patterson had his most active day yet as a pro seeing 19 plays and catching two passes for 49 yards on four targets. He had a great catch in which he had to come back to the ball because it was so badly under-thrown. Patterson seemed to have a better relationship with backup Cassel in the preseason. Is it time to switch? If given the chance, he will make some noise before the year is over. Ace Sanders -- Two catches for 25 yards. Nothing to see here. Should have had a lot more in a bad loss and in catch-up mode. Justin Blackmon is due back also. Don't bother. Brice Butler -- First time on the list. Brice tried to help the Raiders against the mighty Broncos with four catches for 54 yards. With how bad Oakland is, will he get more chances? Justin Hunter -- Kenny Britt is done. He has looked horrible this year. He is only half running on routes and barely lifts a finger to block. His quarterback Jack Locker told the coaches to sit him before the final play in favor of rookie Justin Hunter. In comes Hunter and catches the game winning touchdown of 34 yards. Hunter will be given more chances with the demise of Britt. Tight Ends Vance McDonald -- Vance finally had his chance to play with the injury to Vernon Davis. How did he respond? One catch for six yards, disappointing. Was it the bad play of quarterback Kaepernick, maybe. But this was not a good start. Jordan Reed -- Reed has taken over the top spot from Fred Davis and responded with a five catch, 50-yard game. This has all happened with the Redskins looking awful in the first half of every game. How much more could he do if they show up in the first half? Make sure to check the injury report, he did leave late in the game last week. Gavin Escobar -- Finally given the chance with the injury to Miles Austin, Escobar caught a 24-yard touchdown pass. How long will Austin be out? How long before he gets hurt again? Will Dallas go to a two-tight end offense? Watch and update your rankings. Goal Line Poachers -- Levine Toilolo for Atlanta, Joseph Fauria for Detroit, and Dion Sims for Miami all had games with one catch, all at the goal-line, all for touchdowns. A new trend? Kicker Caleb Sturgis -- Add him to your team folks. For the year he is 6-for-6. Included in that he is 3-for-3 from 40-49 yards out and 2-for-2 from 50 and beyond. I told you about him two weeks ago, go get him. Watch List: Mike Glennon -- Still on the watch list. Through three games Josh Freeman is 43-94 for a completion percentage of 45.7. The talents of Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams are being wasted right now. Nothing doing right now: Kenny Stills, Zach Sudfeld (inj), Denard Robinson, Stepfan Taylor, Christine Michael, Zac Stacy, Markus Wheaton, Joseph Randle, Kenjon Barner, Quinton Patton, Travis Kelce, Josh Boyce, Le'Veon Bell (inj)., Tyler Eifert, Zach Ertz.
