Rookie Review - Week 3 fantasysharks.com Wed 9/18/13 9:06 AM

I hope you all took my advice last week. In the initial installment of this series I informed you to try and get Giovani Bernard , Tavon Austin and DeAndre Hopkins . Together, all they did was get 237 total yards with five touchdowns. Five touchdowns! Now hopefully I have gotten your attention for the rest of the year. Let's get on to the review. Quarterbacks Geno Smith -- The Thursday night game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots was ugly in about 19 different ways. Let us just say that Smith took a giant step back from his Week 1 performance. Smith ended the evening 15-of-35 for 214 yards and three interceptions. Combine that with four more sacks and you can understand what I mean with a giant step back. That is now nine sacks, four interceptions and one fumble in two games. There are already rumblings in New York that a quarterback change may be needed. As it stands right now, Smith is the 32nd rated QB (out of 32 teams). E.J. Manuel -- The Buffalo Bills may be better than we all thought. They played the New England Patriots tough in Game 1 and came away with a last-minute victory over Carolina in Week 2. Manual spear-headed a late drive and threw the game winning touchdown to Stevie Johnson with :02 left on the clock. Manuel has shown composure under pressure and you can tell he is gaining confidence. His line for the game was 27-for-39, 296 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also completed a two-point conversion. I'll say it once again, Manuel should be on your radar. If and when he starts running, you will not be sorry. Running Backs Eddie Lacy -- Everybody in Green Bay had to have their mouths watering for what Lacy was going to do in the home opener. After all, they were playing the Washington Redskins on a short week after having been gutted by Philadelphia's rushing attack. But, it was a sorry sight when Lacy went down with a concussion on his very first carry. A timetable for his return has yet to be announced. A good guess would be around Week 5 or 6 (Green Bay has a Week 4 bye). Giovani Bernard -- One of the guys I told you to try and get, Bernard took the Monday Night spotlight with two touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving). Once again, the Cincinnati Bengals used BenJarvus Green-Ellis more, with 50 snaps to 29 for Bernard. Green-Ellis averaged just better than 3.0 yards per carry compared to 4.75 yards per carry for Bernard. Giovoni is also the better receiver; when will the Bengals make the switch? It is obvious Bernard is also a much bigger threat to break one. He totaled 65 total yards on eight rushes and one reception with those two touchdowns. How much could he do with a bigger workload? Montee Ball -- His second week as a pro and his second straight disappointment. Ball seems to have climbed up to No. 2 on the depth chart, but there is a long was to go to get to No. 1. Ball had 12 rushes for 16 yards. I'm sorry, but that isn't good enough. The Broncos have a good offensive line and they have weapons everywhere so the defense can't load up the box. To his credit, though, he did also catch two balls for 27 yards, but he also fumbled at the goal line. He has major work to do before you can count on him for anything. Andre Ellington -- New to the list, it seems as if Ellington has moved up to No. 2 on the depth chart and is now the third down back for the Arizona Cardinals. Elllington had four carries for 20 yards and two catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. Not only could he catch a lot of passes for the Cardinals, but let us not forget who the No. 1 running back is. Rashard Mendenhall has shown that injuries are common for him. How long before Ellington becomes the lead back for Arizona? Wide Receiver Tavon Austin -- Another of my Week 1 hits, Austin had a line of six catches, 47 yards and two touchdowns on 12 targets and he also had eight yards rushing. He has not done much in the return game so far, but he does have 12 catches through two games. With the combination of the running game struggling and the passing game thriving, you should continue to put Austin in your lineup. DeAndre Hopkins -- No. 3 on the hit parade from last week, Hopkins went off to the tune of seven catches, 119 yards and a touchdown. To top it off, his touchdown was the game winner in overtime. Hopkins showed he could pick up the slack after No. 1 wide receiver Andre Johnson was injured. Hopkins now has the confidence in himself and the trust of his quarterback Matt Schaub . It also appears that the concussion he suffered in preseason is in his rearview mirror. Be prepared for a big year from Hopkins. Marlon Brown -- Brown showed no signs of slowing down in his first game as a starter. Brown may keep the job even when Jacoby Jones is healthy enough for a return. He caught 4-of-6 passes for 45 yards and a touchdown. The numbers don't look like much, but Baltimore ran the ball 36 times. When the time comes for the passing game to open up, Brown will put up more numbers. A great sleeper on your waiver wire. Kembrell Thompkins --In the trainwreck that is the New England wide receiving corps, Thompkins had the chance to redeem himself after his bomb in Week 1. Well, to put it mildly, it didn't turn out that way. Thompkins caught 2-of-7 targets for 47 yards. Tom Brady was seen yelling all evening at his wide receivers. Thompkins is running the wrong routes and is losing focus and is bumped off the line to easily. You can be sure of this; Brady will not put up with it much longer. Aaron Dobson -- As long as we are talking about bust New England wide receivers, let me introduce you to Dobson. Dobson did not see action in Week 1, but the first catch of his career in Game 2 went for 39 yards and a touchdown. Could this be the guy? Sorry, no. Dobson did have three catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, but he had several bad drops. I saw a picture of him online with his hands out to catch the ball and the ball ended up hitting his facemask! Very funny. He also ran quite a few wrong routes. Brady can't pray for Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola to get healthy soon enough. Robert Woods -- The Buffalo Bills may have had the best fantasy draft this year with Manuel and Woods. Woods continued his play from Week 1 with a four catches for 68 yards on six targets. Once they iron out all the wrinkles, this team could really have something. Woods will continue to start and deserves your attention on the waiver wire. Cordarrelle Patterson -- So how do you reward a playmaker who you drafted in the first round when he returns the opening kickoff for a 105-yard touchdown? You let him see the field for six offensive plays. Idiots! Patterson caught both of his targets for 14 yards. It is plain to see for us up here in the land of 10,000 lakes that Patterson needs to be on the field more. Coach Leslie Frazier finally admitted it today. The sooner the better, this team needs to get the ball into this guy's hands! Keenan Allen -- It was another scary situation when Malcom Floyd went down for the San Diego Chargers. He will be out at least this week, and maybe more. Allen came in and caught 2-of-3 balls for 34 yards. With the way San Diego is throwing the ball right now, he should be somebody you pay attention to. Ace Sanders -- Due to the four-game suspension of Justin Blackman, Sanders has to learn under fire. He caught 5-of-7 balls for 64 yards. The question is -- do you trust anybody for Jacksonville? Terrence Williams -- Williams was pretty quiet in Week 1, but he caught all three of his targets in Week 2. Dallas has utilized three wide receiver sets often in the recent past, and don't forget that both Miles Austin and Dez Bryant are not strangers to the injury report. Monitor for now. Tight Ends Tyler Eifert -- It seems more and more that the Cincinnati Bengals will be happy running two tight end sets this year. Both Eifert and Jermaine Gresham totaled 66 yards. Eifert caught three of his five targets but was overthrown on his misses. If Andy Dalton could ever find his game they might really have something. Monitor for now. Zach Ertz -- In the new high-speed offense run by the Philadelphia Eagles, the tight ends are a prime target. Ertz caught both of his targets for 58 yards. Can both Ertz and Brent Celek be functional? I believe so, but if one goes down, the other should produce. Monitor for now. Jordan Reed -- Another new one to the list. It seems as if Jordan may have surpassed Fred Davis in the pecking order in Washington. Reed caught three balls for 18 yards and a touchdown this week and now has a line of eight catches, 56 yards and a touchdown on nine targets compared to Davis' three catches for 25 yards on six targets. Put him on your waiver list; when Robert Griffin III finds his game you may want him on your roster. Watch List: Mike Glennon -- The play of Josh Freeman and the friction between he and Coach Greg Schiano make this a situation to watch. Freeman is 24-for-53 through two games. How does this play out? Nothing doing right now: Kenny Stills , Zach Sudfeld (injured), Denard Robinson , Stepfan Taylor , Christine Michael , Zac Stacy , Johnathan Franklin, Stepfan Taylor , Markus Wheaton , Denard Robinson , Knile Davis , Justin Hunter , Joseph Randle , Kenjon Barner , Quinton Patton , Travis Kelce , Gavin Escobar , Josh Boyce, Le'Veon Bell (injured).
