Playing the Dozens: 12 Must Draft IDP Options at Each Position fantasysharks.com Fri 6/14/13 3:00 PM

As voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) turn into mandatory mini-camps and training camps right around the corner, it is time to kick fantasy draft preparation up a notch or two. With that in mind, I decided to compile a quick hitting list of Individual Defensive Players (IDP) that hold excellent value and should be targeted in all formats. For the most part I am avoiding the ‘no-brainer' elite names such as defensive end J.J. Watt or linebacker studs such as Luke Kuechly, James Laurinaitis and the like. While there are some top-level names listed here, it is because I believe they are poised to join the elite tier and can be drafted as such. Some of the players mentioned have already been covered to some extent in my previous articles and rankings but deserve mentioning again as I am that high on them. These are players that I have targeted and will continue to target in IDP drafts as lynchpin options to lead a squad to a successful season. There are not a lot of ‘so and so posted X amount of tackles last season' to be found in this particular article as I wanted to sprinkle it with my thoughts as to why I feel they are viable options. As the season approaches and position battles are won and lost, there will be plenty of time for the hard hitting stat and scheme based analysis that I love to do, but for now I wanted to just toss out these names to keep high on draft lists. What can I say? I am a visual guy, and the more times I see a name the more likely that player sticks in my mind, so I figured there must be some folks like me out there (that is a scary thought). Why 12 names at each position? Umm ... why not? Let's get to it! DEFENSIVE BACKS Dawan Landry, SS, N.Y. Jets: Takes his little brother's former spot in the Jets secondary and will post similar totals in a prime fantasy scoring position. Casey Hayward, CB, Green Bay : Ball hawking cornerback in a pass-happy division with quarterbacks that combined for 45 picks in 2012. Ascending fantasy talent. Eric Berry, SS, Kansas City: Not everyone is Adrian Peterson, and it took Berry until November to resemble the player he was as a rookie as he returned from his knee injury. He's back! Stevie Brown, FS, N.Y. Giants: No, last season was not a fluke. Look for Brown to post another season of above-average fantasy totals. Antoine Bethea, FS, Indianapolis: Don't fall asleep on this perennial tackling machine just because the Colts signed LaRon Landry. Bethea still represents excellent fantasy production into 2013. Glover Quin, SS, Detroit: He will easily lead the Lions secondary in tackles and could challenge for the overall team lead. Very shaky front seven makes Quin fantasy gold. Kenny Vaccaro, FS/SS, New Orleans: The kid is too good, and Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins were too bad last season to keep Vaccaro off the field. The only question: which one does he replace? Reshad Jones, SS, Miami: Last season he knocked on the door of defensive back elite status. In 2013, he kicks the door down and finishes Top 5 in scoring. T.J. Ward, SS, Cleveland: Returns to Top 10 status after a pair of down seasons for the Browns. Look for triple-digit tackle numbers and a boost in big play totals as he anchors the secondary. Bernard Pollard, SS, Tennessee: His act wears thin pretty fast with teams but he puts up excellent fantasy numbers wherever he plays. Pollard will excel again for at least this season in Tennessee. Ryan Clark, FS, Pittsburgh : He's not a flashy or sexy name to call out on draft day but he brings consistent high-end fantasy production year in and year out. Yeremiah Bell, FS/SS, Arizona: Perfect example of a better fantasy option than actual NFL player. Struggles in coverage but posts solid tackle numbers every year and in fantasy we love that! DEFENSIVE LINEMEN Greg Hardy, DE, Carolina: Knee concerns coming out of college are a thing of the past and Hardy combines with Charles Johnson as perhaps the premier pass rushing bookend defensive end combination in the league. Geno Atkins, DT, Cincinnati: He is the J.J. Watt of his position. There is the Atkins tier and then the rest of the players at defensive tackle. Robert Quinn, DE, St. Louis: Inconsistency that he's shown in the past should be rectified in his third season as he continues his ascension to defensive lineman ‘elite' status. Has surpassed Chris Long as the No. 1 pass-rushing defensive end for the Rams. Nick Fairley, DT, Detroit: Appears to have gotten his head on straight after a lost rookie season and outplayed Ndamukong Suh for stretches last season. If he stays healthy, he cracks Top 10 defensive tackle numbers in 2013. Derrick Morgan, DE, Tennessee: Morgan has finally arrived on the fantasy scene after three less-than-stellar (I'm being kind here) seasons. He's a mainstay along the Titans' defensive line and will post double-digit sacks this season. Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, N.Y. Giants: Kiwanuka is back at his familiar defensive end position, and uncertainty reigns along the Giants' defensive front. Osi Umenyiora is gone and Jason Pierre-Paul is recovering from back surgery. Welcome back to fantasy relevance. Osi Umenyiora, DE, Atlanta: The Falcons will allow Umenyiora to play a full complement of snaps and he will reward them (and fantasy owners) with at least 12 sacks and 35-40 total tackles. Dion Jordan, DE, Miami: The kid from Oregon gets to line up opposite sack master Cameron Wake from Day 1 and do what he does best. With Wake occupying double teams, Jordan racks up nice sack numbers in his rookie season. Rob Ninkovich, DE, New England: He has found his niche with the Patriots and is the best big play producer along their defensive front. Anthony Spencer, DE, Dallas: A position switch to defensive end doesn't adversely affect Spencer's value, and he's in line for another double-digit sack season with 65-70 total tackles. Ezekiel Ansah, DE, Detroit: Detroit doesn't have the luxury of bringing Ansah along slowly as they have no defensive end alternatives. He'll post nice fantasy numbers due to the quantity of playing time he logs. Adrian Clayborn, DE, Tampa Bay: He's become the forgotten man in Tampa Bay since missing the majority of last season due to injury. The emergence of Da'Quan Bowers as a bookend defensive end leads to a very nice 2013 fantasy season for Clayborn. LINEBACKERS Jerrell Freeman, ILB, Indianapolis: Took over for the injured Pat Angerer at inside linebacker last season and now has a stranglehold on the position. Another triple-digit tackle season is on tap. Bruce Carter, WLB, Dallas: Derrick Brooks comparisons are being made when assessing Carter's potential for 2013 at the prime fantasy WLB position in a Monte Kiffin defense. They are fair. Carter is in line for a huge season! Nick Roach, MLB, Oakland: A three-down middle linebacker on a defense that figures to be on the field a lot in 2013. I'll take it all day! D'Qwell Jackson, ILB, Cleveland: Think Daryl Washington ‘lite' in new defensive coordinator Ray Horton's defense when evaluating Jackson. After a down 2012 campaign, Jackson returns to fantasy prominence this season. Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Cincinnati: His unlikely return from the abyss continues, as Burfict will finish 2013 as a Top 15 fantasy scorer at the linebacker position. Daryl Smith, ILB, Baltimore: A great signing by the Super Bowl champions. Will step into a starting role ahead of incumbents Rolando McClain or Albert McClellan. Tackling machine when healthy, and he looks to be good to go in 2013. London Fletcher, ILB, Washington: He is the Michael Myers of the linebacker position and cannot be stopped. Until he finally decides to retire, he will post stellar tackle numbers. And, honestly, I'm not certain he will ever retire. Manti Te'o, ILB, San Diego: Steps in immediately as a three-down linebacker that will see plenty of snaps as a rookie. Te'o is a naturally instinctive player with a nose for the ball that will rack up tons of tackles. Karlos Dansby, ILB, Arizona: He is more than a stopgap while Daryl Washington sits out his suspension and faces additional problems. If and when Washington returns, Dansby will stay on the field in place of Kevin Minter or Jasper Brinkley and put up excellent fantasy numbers. Russell Allen, WLB, Jacksonville: An injury to Daryl Smith allowed Allen to see significant snaps and he had an excellent 2012 season. The Jaguars like him enough to have let Daryl Smith walk via free agency, and he's entrenched as their starting WLB. Another big tackle campaign is on tap for Allen. Erin Henderson, MLB, Minnesota: When he gets consistent snaps, Henderson produces very nice numbers. He's been taking all the starting reps at middle linebacker for the Vikings. That equals very productive fantasy totals in 2013. Demario Davis, ILB, New York Jets: Davis is stepping into Bart Scott's former role, bringing youth and athleticism to a defense that looks to be on the field plenty. He'll have the chance to produce big plays while racking up at least 90 tackles. There we have it, folks. A brief look at 36 defensive players that have excellent fantasy value. Landing three or four from each position would sit just fine with yours truly. It's June and fantasy draft preparations are in full swing so jot (or type, I'm a ‘jotter') these names down and keep them close on draft day. They could mean the difference between a playoff berth and going home early in 2013. As always ... have fun!!
