Smith initially left practice with an injury Aug. 3 and returned Aug. 17, but he hasn't done much since and didn't play in the Saints' final two preseason games. With Michael Thomas (ankle) already out for a chunk of the season, the team could really use Smith on the field Week 1 against Green Bay, even if Marquez Callaway has emerged as Jameis Winston's top option at wide receiver.
