Palmer secured the No. 3 wide receiver role after the Chargers waived Tyron Johnson on Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
There had been rumblings Palmer pushed ahead of Johnson for the No. 3 role after the latter's lackluster showing throughout the waning weeks of training camp, but it's still jarring the Chargers opted to outright cut Johnson given his big-play ability displayed last season. Jalen Guyton (leg) remains a speedy threat waiting in the wings, especially when when considering the top two wideouts -- Keenan Allen and Mike Williams -- are far from burners, but it's clear the team likes Palmer as an outside intermediate threat. The rookie's role in what figures to be an explosive offense will be one of the key points to monitor in the team's opener Sept. 12 against Washington.
