Lattimore (knee) will return to practice Wednesday, the Sacramento Bee reports. Lattimore will return to the field almost exactly two years to the day from the horrific knee injury that ended his college career at the University of South Carolina. Widely regarded as a first-round talent, Lattimore slipped to the fourth round, where he was selected by San Francisco. He's been on the non-football injury list since being drafted, but he'll now have a chance to work himself into the team's backfield rotation. "I've been watching off to the side, and I'm excited to watch him play football again," coach Jim Harbaugh said. "You saw some of it in the offseason, but I think he's further ahead from where he was, two, three, four months ago, and (I'm) excited to see that progress on the field. I'm looking forward to it." The Niners will have a 21-day window in which to evaluate Lattimore's condition. If he proves ready to contribute, he'll be added to the 53-man roster and likely slide in as the third back behind Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde. If not, the team will be required to shut him down for the remainder of the season.
