Dallas Cowboys
Most Important New Arrival
Defensive
end Greg Hardy is still languishing on the
Commissioner’s Exempt List but that did not stop the Cowboys from bringing him
in for a visit and ultimately signing him to a one-year deal. The Cowboys took
into consideration Hardy’s off-the-field woes and determined that his benefits
on the field outweighed the risk, especially when they were able to reduce the
risk in regards to his contract, literally paying him in game-day bonuses. Hardy
will have a monster instant-impact in defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli’s
defense as they look to take the next step in 2015.
Also added – LB Jasper Brinkley, RB Darren McFadden, LB Andrew Gachkar, DB Corey White, FB Jed Collins
Most Important Player Re-Signed
The Cowboys defense easily exceeded expectations last season and
that’s due in no small part to the play of Rolando McClain. McClain, of course, burned the Oakland
Raiders then flamed out in Baltimore before catching fire in Dallas. After a
quick visit to New England to gauge his market value, McClain returns to a Dallas
defense solidifying its linebacking corps.
Also re-signed
– OL Doug Free, DL Nick Hayden
Biggest Loss
When Joseph Randle is able to run behind your dominant
line and gain large chunks of yardage, it’s easy to wonder if you really need a
high priced running back to do the same. DeMarco Murray no doubt had a great season, but
taking into consideration the aforementioned dominance of the offensive line
and Murray’s motivation in a contract year, we can see why Dallas didn’t
overpay for its leading rusher to return. With that said, going with Joseph Randle and new signee Darren McFadden as some sort of committee is a
dangerous prospect for the upcoming year unless of course they are able to add
a top prospect in the draft. Until that happens, Murray is easily the biggest
Dallas loss.
Also lost – LB Bruce Carter, LB Justin Durant, WR Dwayne Harris, DE George Selvie, DB Sterling Moore, DL Henry Melton
New York Giants
Most Important New Arrival
The addition of Shane Vereen will no doubt cause fantasy owners
headaches this upcoming year but the Giants hope it causes headaches for
opposing defenses as well. Rashad Jennings played 11 games last year and has
never played 16 games in his career, so instead of trusting an overwhelmed Andre Williams and an underwhelmed Peyton Hillis like last season, the Giants wisely
added Vereen to the mix. Vereen is already being talked about as more than a
third-down back so it’s anyone’s guess on how the workload is split.
Also added – DE George Selvie, WR Dwayne Harris, DT Kenrick Ellis, LB JT Thomas
Most Important Player Re-Signed
None of
the players that were re-signed stand out, so let’s give some love to the return
of full back Henry Hynoski, who bounced back from an injury
the previous year and led the way for Rashad Jennings and the Giants last
season.
Also re-signed – OG John Jerry, TE Daniel Fells, DB Chykie Brown
Biggest Loss
Safety Antrel Rolle’s best
years are long behind him but what he lacked in upside he made up for in
dependability, having only missed one game in the last nine seasons. The Giants
don’t necessarily have an on-hand replacement and failed to address the
position during free agency intensifying the loss. Expect them to take one or
two safeties in the upcoming draft.
Also lost – C JD Walton, DB Walter Thurmond
Philadelphia Eagles
Most Important New Arrival
Coach
Chip
Kelly won the power struggle for control of his team and quickly tore it down
and built it back up in a matter of weeks. There have been plenty of additions
to the team but when charged with selecting the most important new arrival, we
no doubt have to start with the most important position. The Eagles fought the
Cleveland Browns for the rights to Sam Bradford and he will be the quarterback
of the future and most likely placed on injured reserve by mid-season. The
addition of Bradford was met with skepticism but Kelly believes his offensive
system and his offseason training regiment can do wonders for Bradford’s
future. If it doesn’t, we may begin to wonder about Kelly’s future.
Also added – RB DeMarco Murray, RB Ryan Mathews, DB Byron Maxwell, DB Walter Thurmond, WR Miles Austin
Most Important Player Re-Signed
Of all of the players rumored to be on the way out this offseason,
Brandon Graham was deemed most likely to leave. The
edge rusher instead returns to the only team he has played for on a brand new
four-year deal. The Eagles have solid inside linebackers but are thin on the
outside where Graham will pair with Connor Barwin again in 2015.
Also re-signed
– QB Mark Sanchez
Biggest Loss
There is little doubt the
Eagles have taken a step back at the wide receiver position the last two seasons
after the departures of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. Maclin rebounded nicely from a
torn ACL in 2013 to set career high totals across the board but the Eagles
elected to move on instead of paying him the $55 million that former coach Andy
Reid was willing to give him. In Maclin’s place, Chip Kelly will trust second-year
wide receivers Jordan Mathews and Josh Huff along with country music fan Riley Cooper to pick up the slack with a new
rookie most likely added to the mix.
Also lost – RB LeSean McCoy (trade), LB Trent Cole, QB Nick Foles (trade), OL Todd Herremans, LB Casey
Mathews, DB Cary Williams, DB Bradley Fletcher, S Nate Allen
Washington
Most Important New Arrival
Terrance
Knighton heads to Washington on a one-year prove-it deal and the 28-year-old
nose tackle has plenty to prove. With whispers that he was out of shape
plaguing him at the onset of free agency, Knighton will look to have a dominant
year in an attempt to cash in next offseason. I can think of plenty of worse
things than having an inspired defensive tackle leading the charge on defense.
Also added – DB Chris Culliver, DT Stephen Paea, DB Jeron Johnson
Most Important Player Re-Signed
Niles Paul is not the most gifted tight end but he may end up as
the most dependable as current starter Jordan Reed has only appeared in 20 games over
his first two seasons. When given a chance, Paul played extremely well last
season and will look to claim the starting tight end job as his own in 2015 and
beyond. Another impressive season may make Jordan Reed expendable.
Also re-signed – QB Colt McCoy
Biggest Loss
Fans will probably lament
the loss of Brian Orakpo but I’ll head the other direction
and claim running back Roy Helu leaving for Oakland to be the bigger
loss. Helu was always an underrated spark to the offense and while he was never
fantasy relevant, his skill set blended perfectly with starter Alfred Morris. With no in-house ready candidate,
Washington will need to be on the lookout for another underrated third-down
back.
Also lost – LB Brian Orakpo, DE Jarvis Jenkins, WR Leonard Hankerson
