The Raiders have elected to not pick up Jacobs' fifth-year contract option, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The same applies to fellow 2019 first-rounders Clelin Ferrell and Johnathan Abram, though GM Dave Ziegler relayed that the team looks "forward to working with all three players and (will) evaluate each situation individually moving forward." With that, Jacobs remains under contract with Las Vegas this coming season, and it's still possible the Raiders will look to keep the 24-year-old around beyond 2022, especially if produces well in the final year of his rookie deal. In 15 games last year, Jacobs carried 217 times for 872 yards and nine TDs, while adding 54 catches (on 64 targets) for 348 yards. He's slated to reprise his lead role in the team's backfield this coming season, with Kenyan Drake set to work in a complementary role and Brandon Bolden and Ameer Abdullah on hand in reserve.
I don't know what's the deal with Jacobs and the Raiders. He performs just fine, yet the Raiders never seemed to believe in him. He's an okay pass catcher, yet they don't utilize him as that. They pay a lot of money to backups, but don't utilize them, either.
Normally, that would make me speculate about character concerns. But whenever I hear interviews with him, he strikes me as humble, soft-spoken and pretty clear-minded. Maybe that's the problem - maybe the Raiders prefer big-mouth go-getter type of guys, and that's definitely not him. That would tell a lot more about the Raiders' leadership than about Jacobs himself, though.
Well said. It amazes me how much the NFL has devalued the RB position considering the number of touches exceeds any other position, the wear and tear of the position plus the pass blocking involved. When you have a solid player that can pass block, and handle the rock like Jacobs does, you are better off locking him up until their age 27 year. Picking up the option might be too pricey, I don't know but he clearly outplays the depth on that team.
Raiders fans seem to expect Zamir White to be the next big thing. I have my doubts, though. White is a 2nd or 3rd tier RB in a mediocre class. He was the 8th RB to come off the board. #8 RBs in recent years were:
2021: Chuba Hubbard
2020: Ke’Shawn Vaughn
2019: Bryce Love
2018: Royce Freeman
Not exactly names that set the RB world on fire.
Jacobs may not have fully lived up to expectations, but I still think he's undervalued, both in the NFL and in fantasy leagues.
