Davis announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday, ESPN reports. Davis' retirement statement details his desire for time off from football for his brain and body to heal. As already one of the NFL's premier offensive tackles at just 25 years old, Davis' retirement is certainly surprising, but it appears health concerns played a prominent role in his decision. In retiring, Davis joins Patrick Willis, Justin Smith and Chris Borland as key 49ers that have all decided to hang up their cleats this offseason.

When you retire do you get paid still or does the contract expire.... What is going on in the bay area.

I think its the front office. 2 retirements may be a coincidence 3 is not.

I dunno Smith was no surprise, willis was battling an injury and debated for awhile. It's possible Davis is just reacting to whatever information he got from Borland who did a lot of homework before retiring.

Nobody wants to play in San Fran anymore, they are all retiring. haha

Borland was worried about head trauma, i dont see how that relates to a Offensive Tackle.

Head trauma relates to everyone in the nfl whether they want to admit it or not.

it's a chain reaction within teammates

Patrick Willis? was the 2nd retirement.

If memory serves, I think Willis was the first, Borland was straight after, then Smith and now Davis.

As far as Borland was concerned, he had multiple concussions whilst in college and then had another one during his yr in SF so I think its fair enough for him. Like Jynxed says, Willis was battling an injury and Smith was no surprise.

Reading Davis' statement, I think he just wants to take a yr out of the game to get his body and mind (lacking motivation) healed so he can go again.

In any case this imo Hyde's stock takes a hit. He lost his best guard to FA. His best run blocking OL just retired. Alex Boone may not be motivated. All thats left is Joe Staley.

Yeah, I know. can't say I'm looking forward to the season with glee. Could easily finish bottom of the div with a losing record this year.Could also say that serves themselves right for getting rid of Harbaugh.

For some reason I never thought harbaugh had control of the locker room? Aldon Smith and McDonald were huge wtf's. I also thought the team fell apart when Colin couldn't win them the superbowl. Some niner players seemed to really support Alex Smith.

Smith was a sound QB and leader and protected the ball. turned into a very good game manager. Colin had everyone drooling over his bullets until everyone realized that all he knows how to throw are bullets. I think the coach had great control of the locker room for the first few years but his hard nosed, in your face attitude wore thin when they could not take down the Hawks. Still think it was a mistake letting him go but I think the bigger issue is he hated the front office and they hated him. sure seems like the players are not so interested in playing for this new coach. they went from worst to first very quickly and now look to go right back to the basement.

Egos got in the way between Harbaugh and the FO imo. Both sides thought they were the ones responsible for getting the 49ers to the position they were in. Joegibbs is right about CKap, not sure if not wanting to play for the new coach is the reason for the retirements though. Maybe at the back of their minds they thought they would now be on an uncompetitive team and didn't fancy it anymore (though I doubt that in Willis' case at least), but if its true then it doesn't say much about the players tbh and maybe the 49ers are better off without them going forward.
