Colts rookie RB Vick Ballard rushed 10 times for 34 yards in the team's second preseason game Sunday night against Pittsburgh. Indianapolis' run blocking was putrid, but Ballard runs with good pad level and did well to keep falling forward. The fifth-round pick out of Mississippi State looks clearly to be ahead of Delone Carter on the Colts' depth chart. Look for Donald Brown, Ballard, and third-down back Mewelde Moore to open the season as Indianapolis' top three running backs, playing in a rotation.

Brown is the starter but look for Ballard to take the rock by mid season. The only reason Brown has the starting job is by default. We all know he is ineffective in the regular season and can't stay on the field with minimum playing time. There is no reason to think with the full load of 25 carries a game he can that.

Ballard was drafted by this new group and will have a legit reason to take the rock from the ineffective and injure prone Brown.
