Jets QB Drew Stanton is reportedly hoping that the team will release him after Tim Tebow's acquisition. Stanton didn't draw any known interest from teams other than the Jets before signing a one-year, $1.25 million deal on March 16. There are plenty of teams that would be interested in an athletic second- or third-stringer, though. Reentering the free agent market would allow Stanton to have say on his new club.

Newly acquired Jets QB Drew Stanton reportedly may ask for a trade or his release after the team's addition of Tim Tebow. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was noncommittal about Stanton's future in a Wednesday night conference call. "We'll see," said Tannenbaum. "... When we signed Drew, we didn't think (Tebow) was a possibility." Tannenbaum confirmed Tebow would be the No. 2 quarterback behind Mark Sanchez, leaving Stanton potentially ahead of only Greg McElroy on the Jets' depth chart.

Jets signed QB Drew Stanton to a one-year, $1.25 million contract. The Jets have finally found Mark Sanchez's backup. A 2007 second-round pick, Stanton acquitted himself well for the Lions in relief of Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill in 2010, but didn't take a single snap in 2011. Two months shy of his 28th birthday, he's completed 104-of-187 passes for 1,158 yards, five touchdowns and nine interceptions across parts of 13 career games. Although he's a massive upgrade on Mark Brunell, Stanton does not represent the legitimate competition the Jets were planning to bring in before panicking and extending Sanchez's contract. Stanton will only play in the event of injury.

The Jets will host free agent QB Drew Stanton this week. Stanton is a fallback option if the Jets don't land free agent Chad Henne, who is drawing more interest from the Seahawks and Jaguars. The athletic but erratic Stanton would not pose much competition for starter Mark Sanchez.

Lions GM Martin Mayhew is hopeful of re-signing free agent Drew Stanton, but Stanton plans to test the open market. Fellow backup Shaun Hill is also a free agent, but is expected to re-sign with the Lions. "I'll see what the interest levels are, and make the best possible decision for me and my family," Stanton said. Stanton held his own filling in for Hill and Matthew Stafford in 2010, but didn't take a single snap last season. If he draws lukewarm interest as a backup, the odds are high he'll end up back in Detroit as the Lions' third-stringer.

Lions agreed to terms with QB Drew Stanton on a one-year contract. Stanton must not have received much interest in a No. 2 job, but the short contract allows the 27-year-old to test the market again next season. His promising play late last season suggests the Lions have plenty of depth to withstand another injury to Matthew Stafford.

Free agent Drew Stanton has told Pro Football Weekly that he would like to test the open market, but that he would be "comfortable" with re-signing with Detroit. "Given that opportunity, I'd be foolish not to see what's out there," he said. With four years of service time, Stanton will likely become an unrestricted free agent under the new CBA. He performed well in parts of six games last season, but doesn't have starter upside. He'd likely be best off staying in Detroit, where he has a good shot at becoming Matthew Stafford's long-term backup.
