ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday NFL Countdown that Donovan McNabb has been contacted by multiple teams and could be signed when the waivers process is completed Monday. McNabb is an unrestricted free agent and able to sign without the remainder of his $5.05 million base salary. It's not yet known which teams have expressed interest in McNabb, but both sides are expected to be in a ''holding pattern'' for now. The Bears and Texans have both stated that they plan to move forward with their current quarterback situations.

Coach Lovie Smith said Friday that the Bears have no interest in free agent Donovan McNabb. McNabb would be an incredibly poor fit in a Mike Martz offense because of his accuracy woes. "I like our quarterbacks we have right now," said Smith. "I'm not going to start talking about guys from the outside. That should be enough for you. We have three quarterbacks here. We like them." ESPN's Chris Mortensen has reported that the Bears won't be signing McNabb.

Donovan McNabb passed through waivers unclaimed and will be free to sign with any team beginning on Monday. He's an unrestricted free agent. It was just 383 days ago that the Redskins signed McNabb to a "five-year, $78 million extension" that proved to be perhaps the phoniest contract in the history of professional sports. Now 34 and short on both mobility and accuracy, McNabb is generating no interest. ESPN's Chris Mortensen has reported that the Bears have no plans to sign McNabb as a free agent, and the Texans prefer Jake Delhomme. The Vikings replaced McNabb on Friday by claiming Sage Rosenfels off waivers from the Dolphins. At this point, it would be an upset if McNabb made another NFL start.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Bears are not expected to claim Donovan McNabb off waivers. Mort also reports that the Cowboys won't claim McNabb, and SI's Peter King reports that the Texans won't, either. McNabb is likely to pass through waivers unclaimed, making him a free agent on Monday of next week. The Vikings are still going to be on the hook for the remainder of his $5.05 million base salary.

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities reports Donovan McNabb requested his release after falling to No. 3 on the depth chart behind Joe Webb. McNabb's heart wasn't into it after being relegated to quarterback on the scout-team offense. Even if Christian Ponder went down with an injury, McNabb wouldn't have played. It's the third time in the past two years (Eagles, Redskins) that a coach has decided two other options were superior to McNabb.

NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora "hears" Donovan McNabb's best chance to land a job is with the Bears. McNabb isn't a good bet to be claimed by any team, and LaCanfora suggests the Bears may be the only team willing to take a shot once he's free from waivers. McNabb may be an upgrade on Josh McCown as the No. 2 QB, but we don't envision him taking over for Caleb Hanie if signed.

Appearing on ESPN's SportsCenter Thursday evening, Donovan McNabb insisted he is "not a locker room cancer," and touted his experience and athleticism. McNabb also declined to take any blame for the struggles of the teams he's been on the past two seasons, saying he's "played with a lot of great athletes" capable of "positive things," but that they had "nothing to really show for it." He also dubiously asserted he can still "make the guys around him better" before saying the key to success with whomever he winds up with will be "being surrounded by a great supporting cast."

According to Tom Pelissero of ESPN 1500 Twin Cities, Donovan McNabb was "out of shape when he showed up and fell even more out of shape once he got benched" in Minnesota. It's not the first time McNabb's "cardiovascular endurance" has been questioned. We've been operating under the belief that McNabb's agent must have an agreement in the works with another team, but it's hard to believe he's going to be an impact addition if so. Per NFL Network's Michael Lombard, McNabb also showed up late for team functions, showed a poor work ethic, and struggled to learn the Vikings offense. Coach Leslie Frazier disputes that report.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain reports the Texans will not put in a waiver claim for Donovan McNabb. The Texans are already up against the salary cap, so McNabb's $1.5 million due is a hurdle. McClain suggests the Texans are content with their three quarterbacks regardless, though he does raise the possibility of coach Gary Kubiak contacting McNabb as a street free agent if desperation sets in later in the month. Reporters from the Bears and Cowboys also highly doubt those teams will put in a claim for McNabb.

Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones said Thursday that it's "too early" to think about adding a veteran quarterback with Jon Kitna battling a back injury. The Cowboys, Chiefs, and Bears were the three teams to put in for Kyle Orton. Dallas holds the 21st waiver claim this week, with Chicago 24th. Calvin Watkins and Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas both doubt the Cowboys will be interested in McNabb. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune would be "very surprised" if the Bears have interest in McNabb. If he wasn't out of shape, McNabb wouldn't get Mike Martz's scheme down in time to be an upgrade on Caleb Hanie.
