A player as explosive as Smith isn't used to grinding out small amounts of yardage underneath, but he was highly effective doing so in this game and played a crucial role in helping the Eagles hold on to a 20-17 win on the road. While it's rare that the Eagles passing game can support all of Smith, A.J. Brown and Dallas Goedert for big receiving production in a single game, Smith has proven repeatedly that he can put up big numbers when the usage is there. Smith and the Eagles face Dallas in Week 6.

Brown on Sunday versus the Jaguars. While Smith was blanked on four targets in the season opener, he's since gathered in 15 of 19 targets for 249 yards and one touchdown over the last two games.

Smith may just be enduring some bumps and bruises from his breakout 8-169-1 performance on 12 targets during the Eagles' Week 3 win at Washington. Smith had been shut out on the stat sheet in Week 1 against the Lions, which had led Jalen Hurts to promise the second-year speedster things would be different in short order. The Eagles' signal-caller more than made good on his promise Monday night, feeding Smith the second-most targets, which led to a team-high number of receptions. Smith's 11.4 yards per catch was a modest figure by his standards, but the solid performance had to have elicited a sigh of relief from his flummoxed fantasy managers. Smith's next opportunity to build on the resurgent effort comes in a Week 3 NFC East battle Sunday against a Commanders team that allowed 256 passing yards and four passing touchdowns to the Lions' Jared Goff in Week 2.

The speedster had a catch wiped out by penalty and ultimately didn't record an official reception for the first time in his young career. Ironically but perhaps not coincidentally, the closest Smith came to a shutout in his rookie campaign was against this same Lions squad back in last season's Week 8 meeting, so perhaps there is a schematic factor at play. Nevertheless, Smith is hardly a candidate to be sidelined much longer in the Eagles' air attack irrespective of the outsized presence of A.J. Brown, so a bounce-back effort could well be in store during a Week 2 home matchup against the Vikings on Monday night, Sept. 19.

Smith is unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason finale against the Dolphins with coach Nick Sirianni expected to sit Eagles starters, Josh Tolentino of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
