Funchess was listed as a limited practice participant Wednesday due to a back injury.
EDGE Analysis
Funchess is listed as a starter on the Colts' posted depth chart, and he should see his share of snaps out of the gate, assuming his back issue isn't a major concern. That said, some of the optimism regarding the wideout's potential to engineer a bounce-back campaign has been dampened by Andrew Luck's retirement and Indy's resulting switch at quarterback to Jacoby Brissett.

Funchess had two receptions for 21 yards on three targets in his Indianapolis debut in Thursday's preseason loss at Buffalo.
EDGE Analysis
Funchess has had a strong camp by all accounts and should begin the season as the No. 2 receiver. However, the continued absence of Andrew Luck from training camp practices due to a calf injury is a worry because the duo may not get much of chance to build a rapport before the regular season beings.

Coach Frank Reich said he was pleased with what he saw from Funchess during the offseason program, while Kevin Bowen of 1070 The Fan believes the wide receiver was inconsistent during the handful of practices open to the media.
EDGE Analysis
Benched by Carolina down the stretch last season, Funchess bounced back strong with a one-year, $10 million contract from Indianapolis at the very beginning of free agency. Reich said he urged his front office to sign Funchess, noting that the 25-year-old shows impressive quickness and route-running skill for a wideout his size. Reich doubled down on the positive evaluation last week, specifically pointing to Funchess's quick grasp of the offensive scheme, and then rehashing the compliments about his route running, size and body control. Some of the inconsistency during spring practices might be attributed to quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who filled in with the starting offense while Andrew Luck recovered from a calf injury. There hasn't been any hint of Funchess needing to compete for the No. 2 receiver job, but there's no guarantee the role comes with a high volume of targets, as the Colts also want to find regular touches for multiple running backs and tight ends.

Head coach Frank Reich said at this week's owner's meetings that he pushed for the Colts to sign Funchess this offseason, Zak Keefer of the Indianapolis Star reports. "I'm so excited about Devin. I mean, when I watch his tape, what I see is a big man who is really athletic. I like to talk about having route-running skill -- this combination of having good feet, good instincts and good body control, and then what sometimes we refer to as body quickness ... it helps you separate at the top of routes, it helps you get off versus press coverage. And Devin has all of that," Reich explained.
EDGE Analysis
Funchess came to Indianapolis on a one-year, $10 million contract this offseason after a year in which he finished as Pro Football Focus' 73rd-ranked receiver. However, the 6-foot-4 receiver's grade was in part dragged down by his poor performance on deep routes, which is something he may not be asked to do often on a Colts team that has one of the best lid-lifters in the league in T.Y. Hilton. With that said, his best work comes when he's used as more of a possession receiver and goal-line target, and he'll have to compete with for end-zone looks within an offense that loves to use its tight ends. It's also possible that Indianapolis uses an early-round draft pick on a receiver this spring to join a receiving corps that otherwise includes Hilton, Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron.

The Colts are expected to sign Funchess to a one-year contract, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the deal is worth $13 million. Indianapolis entered the offseason with the most available cap space, but such an amount seems like an overpay for a wide receiver that never tallied more than 900 yards in any of his four pro campaigns. Nonetheless, his new employer doesn't have much receiving talent beyond T.Y. Hilton (ankle) and Eric Ebron, so there should be plenty of volume left over for Funchess from Andrew Luck.

Funchess acknowledged he is looking for a new team, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
The writing was on the wall when Funchess served as a healthy scratch for the final game of the 2018 campaign. It appears neither player nor team has any interest in a reunion, with D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel locked in as the top wide receivers in Carolina. The 24-year-old Funchess may want to consider a one-year contract if he's confident his 2017 breakout wasn't a fluke.

The Panthers have not expressed a desire to bring Funchess back in 2019, David Newton of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Head coach Ron Rivera indicated Carolina was "moving forward" when the team decided to sit Funchess for the regular-season finale last month. Now scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March, Funchess appears to have played his last snaps for the Panthers. The tall-but-slow wideout (Funchess owns 4.70-second time in the 40-yard dash) wasn't the best fit in an offense that prioritizes yards after the catch anyway, so this development could be mutually beneficial.

Funchess (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Saints, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Charlotte Observer reports.
EDGE Analysis
Funchess' snap and targets counts have been trending down for the last month, but it's still somewhat surprising that he's a health scratch for the season finale. It almost certainly spells an end to his stint in Carolina, as Funchess will become a free agent in March and is unlikely to be retained after youngsters D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel passed him up on the depth chart at receiver this season.

Funchess caught two of four targets for 23 yards during Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Falcons.
EDGE Analysis
Funchess was an afterthought in the passing game, finishing sixth on the team in targets and fifth in receiving yardage. Oddly enough this was actually a step up for Funchess, who hadn't caught a pass since Week 13 and has just one grab over his last three games. Funchess' fantasy value has clearly waned as the season has gone along and he'll hope to finish on a positive note next Sunday against the Saints.

Funchess was held without a catch while being targeted once in Monday's 12-9 loss to the Saints.
EDGE Analysis
Funchess' lone look was actually intercepted, as quarterback Cam Newton unsuccessfully attempted to give him a shot on a jump ball along the sideline of the end zone in the second quarter's waning moments. Besides that, Funchess played just 11 offensive snaps, continuing his spare use in recent weeks and furthering the sentiment that he likely isn't a part of Carolina's plans beyond this season.
