In The Spotlight - Week 11 Recap fantasysharks.com Mon 11/19/12 4:00 AM

Week 11 Fantasy Headlines: Matt Schaub Racks Up 527 Passing Yards & 5 TD Passes AJ Compiles Career-High 14 Catches and 273 Receiving Yards Chad Henne & Justin Blackmon Both Compile Monster Outings Brady & Patriots Roll Over Colts; Gronkowski Injured "The Arm" Torches Philadelphia With 4 TD Passes Arian Foster's Scoring Streak Snapped Matt Ryan Tosses Five Picks and No TDs But Falcons Still Win Another 130-Plus Total-Yard Game From Trent Richardson A.J. Green Scores In His Ninth Straight Game GAME SUMMARIES & FANTASY COMMENTARY: Bye week: Minnesota Vikings (6-4), New York Giants (6-4), Seattle Seahawks (6-4) and Tennessee Titans (4-6). THURSDAY NIGHT GAME: Buffalo Bills 19 (4-6) | Miami Dolphins 14 (4-6) Fantasy Focus -- Bills: Buffalo did not score an offensive touchdown. With Fred Jackson (concussion) inactive, electric C.J. Spiller (22-91-0 rushing and 3-39-0 receiving) carried the offense, amassing 130 total yards on a season-high 25 total touches. Unfortunately, the Bills frequently replaced Spiller in the red zone with the largely ineffective Tashard Choice (6-14-0 rushing and 1-0-0 receiving). With the running game clicking and the much-maligned Buffalo defense playing well, the Bills elected to go conservative on offense. Ryan Fitzpatrick (17/27 for 168-0-0 passing and 3-15-0 rushing) has not tossed a touchdown pass in two of his last three games played, and it was the fifth time this season that Fitzpatrick passed for less than 200 yards in a game. Steve Johnson (6-79-0 on nine targets) topped Buffalo in receiving, and he has caught six balls in two straight contests. Fitzpatrick tried to get the ball to Donald Jones (2-11-0 on five targets) twice in the end zone, but they didn't hook up. The Bills triggerman also had a red-zone pass intended for Scott Chandler (2-30-0 on four targets) broken up. The Buffalo defense allowed seven offense points and racked up three sacks, two interceptions and one recovered fumble. Leodis McKelvin scored on a 79-yard punt return in the first quarter. Fantasy Tip: Although the Bills are trying to get the ball into the hands of Jones more frequently, I wouldn't trust him as anything more than a so-so WR4 right now. The Buffalo offense should reassert itself in Week 12 with a favorable road matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Fantasy Focus -- Dolphins: Remember all the predictions about Reggie Bush (10-20-0 rushing and 2-15-0 receiving) coming out and playing like a man on a mission after he ...

Week 11: Call for Backup fantasysharks.com Thu 11/15/12 5:00 AM

Handcuffing backup running backs or even keeping an eye on wide receivers further down the depth chart has been common practice in fantasy football. However, Tim Tebow was likely the only backup quarterback taken in fantasy drafts this year, and has been a worthless pick thus far. After four starting quarterbacks went down in Week 10, several new and even familiar names may sputter onto the fantasy radar for Week 11. Philadelphia Eagles' fans are struggling to find reasons to be thankful this season as we near Thanksgiving. Their optimism took a nosedive in Week 10 after suffering their fifth straight loss and a "significant concussion" to quarterback Michael Vick, which will sideline him for Week 11. Rookie Nick Foles will get the start against division rival Washington this weekend. Head to the NFC North, where the Chicago Bears will also be without their starting signal caller, Jay Cutler, who suffered a concussion against the Houston Texans. After signing a one-year $3.5 million deal, backup quarterback Jason Campbell will attempt to provide Chicago with a return on their investment as he is scheduled to start against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. San Francisco may also be starting their backup, as Alex Smith also suffered a concussion last weekend, but is yet to be ruled out. If unavailable, Colin Kaepernick would earn the start. Last but not least, Ben Roethlisberger will also be missing time for Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger's shoulder and rib injuries will seat him in favor of Byron Leftwich. Leftwich and the Pittsburgh Steelers will face the division leading Baltimore Ravens, who just trounced the Oakland Raiders 55-20 and are likely licking their chops. Welcome to the fantasy radar Foles, Campbell, Leftwich, and possibly Kaepernick! Week 11 was chock full of exceptional performances and surprises, including quarterbacks Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton and Matt Ryan posting monster numbers. Calvin Johnson, Jimmy Graham and Adrian Peterson could not be outdone as they rewarded their fantasy owners generously. Who will step up in Week 11? Take a dive with me and find out. QB Carson Palmer Where do you think Palmer ranks this season? In most leagues, he ranks around 11th in average points per week and third in passing yards per game among quarterbacks; not bad for watching NFL from his sofa just over a year ago! Palmer has a very sexy matchup this week against the lowly New Orleans secondary, who has allowed three ...

Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 9 fantasysharks.com Tue 10/30/12 9:00 AM2 Comments

A relatively healthy week for key fantasy players, so we are setting aside the top category for this week. Nothing terribly exciting, but we do have a handful of players that should be on fantasy rosters. We also talk about several backup running backs that are also worth consideration for pickup. A little something for everyone this week! Solid Pickups WR Ryan Broyles, Detroit We were able to squeeze Broyles into last week's listing in the bottom category, as the extent of Nate Burleson's injury during the Lions Monday night game was not known by the time we had to go to press. With Burleson gone for the season, Broyles now assumes full time duty in the slot for Detroit. This will get him on the field for right around 50% of the offensive plays. He caught a touchdown pass in the Monday night contest, as well as in this past week's game. Only six catches in total over the two games, so we're not ready to recommend that you plug him intoyour starting lineup, but he should be owned in all formats. WR Cecil Shorts, Jacksonville Moving up one category from last week, Shorts warrants another mention this week as he is still available in more than 75% of online leagues. After a week seven performance that had him go for 79 yards on four catches and a touchdown, he doubled is catches, hauling in eight passes for 116 yards. He is Blaine Gabbert's top option, and his numbers will not be affected when Laurent Robinson returns from injury. He is a very solid pickup this week, worth owning in all formats. RB Daniel Thomas, Miami The Dolphins have made Thomas the goal line back, and he's starting to assert himself even beyond that role. He punched in one short yardage carry for a touchdown on a day where he totaled 15 carries. Reggie Bush was ineffective, and was the recipient of only 14 carries on the day. This is not a sign that Bush is being phased out, but it is a clear indication that Miami is going to be looking to split thingsdown the middle, with Thomas getting the edge at the goal line. RB Joique Bell, Detroit Mikel Leshoure has battled injury for most of the season, and this week he struggled to make it through the game, sitting out most of the fourth quarter in favor of Bell. There is no indication that Leshoure has an injury that will keep him out of the lineup, however, with all the action that Bell has beengettingits giving him and the coaching staff more confidence in his ability to handle a larger role. For now, he remains the ...

Fantasy Intelligence Report - Week 4 fantasysharks.com Sat 9/29/12 9:06 AM

Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush had many fantasy owners gasping for air last week when he went down with a sprained left knee against the New York Jets. Less than a week later, Bush is insisting that he has recovered and will be ready to go come Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. However, according to the Sun-Sentinel, ultimately Bush knows it will be up to head coach Joe Philbin to decide his status this week. "... I'll tell you right now I'm playing Sunday, but I'm sure that's why I'm not the head coach," Bush said. "I'm going to do everything I can from a physical and mental standpoint to prepare myself as if I'm playing Sunday and, if I get the call and it's true that I can play, then I'll be ready to go." It's good to know that Bush is optimistic. However, Philbin will continue to evaluate his running back's progress and make an informed logical decision that won't allow for any setbacks. "You just need to trust your eyes, watch the film and see where he's at," Philbin said. "Obviously, health and safety of the players is the No. 1 concern. It's important. I'm sure if he's healthy enough, he'll play. If he's not, he won't." If Bush can't go, Daniel Thomas will likely get the lion's share of the carries. Rookie Lamar Miller was a hot waiver wire pickup this week due to Bush's uncertain status, but may provide fantasy owners with more value than Thomas, regardless. Thus far, through the two games Miller has appeared in, he has averaged 5.9 yards per carry, and has already scored a touchdown. The Dolphins' opponent this week, the Arizona Cardinals, are one of four teams heading in to Week 4 that haven't allowed a rushing touchdown and rank 17th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game (106). The big news out of New York this week comes via New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw. According to the New York Daily News, Bradshaw revealed Thursday that he didn't sprain his neck two weeks ago, but suffered a bulging inflamed disc. It's the same type of injury that ended linebacker Antonio Pierce's career back in 2009, and it's an injury that doctors can do nothing for. "They can't do anything," Bradshaw said. "Just let it heal. It's pretty much like an inflamed disc. It's sitting right on my spinal cord, I guess. The swelling went down and I feel fine now. No setbacks, no problem." This isn't the news Bradshaw owners were looking for long-term, but allows some injections in to starting lineups this week, as the Giants ...

Risers and Fallers: Week 2 fantasysharks.com Fri 9/14/12 9:06 AM7 Comments

Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers Michael Bush There is absolutely no questioning the fact that all Matt Forte owners must start him all 16 games when healthy. Even losing rushing touchdowns to Bush doesn't sway his value. But what about the owners who may have waited a while on draft day to snag a running back? Whether it be injury or a matchup against a stud defense, owners may be forced to look outside the Top 20 ranked options. Michael Bush could turn out to be a great option outside of the Top 20 that can quietly sneak you big points. In Week 1, Bush found himself in the end zone twice. This should work out to be a reappearing theme. It's going to be interesting to see if the coaches can keep the points equal among their running backs. Week 2 offers the chance to establish consistency. Bush could work out to be the best No. 3 drafted runner in 2012 and a borderline No. 2 option. Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants Eli Manning The Giants' loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the season opener was certainly not all his fault. Wide receivers that are usually quite reliable dropped pass after pass. On top of that, the offensive line of the Giants was completely demolished by the Cowboys' pass rush, sacking Manning three times and providing pressure all night. This could turn out to be the case all season long. Manning is going to need to bounceback in a big way in Week 2. Though his numbers were not terrible and he was indeed a victim of circumstance, he was drafted to be a team's top fantasy option at quarterback. In order to retain his Top 10 status we'll have to see his yards and touchdowns go up and the sacks go down. If Manning underperforms to our newly establish standards, owners could begin to push the panic button. You can't spell elite with Eli but you also can't spell elimination, which many owners would face with a letdown performance. Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins Reggie Bush Bush put up much better numbers against the stout Houston Texans' defensive in Week 1 than anyone was really expecting. He's going to have a massive workload this season as the Dolphins break in rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The two things we can take away from Week 1 are that Bush is seemingly picking up right where he left off in 2011 and Daniel Thomas is doing the same. Thomas was injured in Week 1 and isn't a lock to play in Week 2. Bush may be in for in an even further expansion to his already expanded workload. The Raiders' run defense ...

Monday Morning Takeaway: Preseason Week 1 (Cont.) fantasysharks.com Mon 8/13/12 8:50 AM

New York Jets 6, Cincinnati 17 Jets The Jets offense was hard to watch, and even harder to write about. The blocking performance from the offensive line was awful in both the pass and run game as starting quarterback Mark Sanchez was unable to generate consistent production. Shonn Greene continued his usual plodding style picking up a meager 11 yards on five carries. I was hoping so badly for Bilal Powell or Joe McKnight to jump off the screen and take over the Jets backfield. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The highlight of the night for the Jets was two longer runs by Tim Tebow, immediately followed by a terrible interception. Even more goofy was watching Tebow run down on punt coverage. I'm not sure any Jets player is worthy of drafting. Bengals Bengals' quarterback Andy Dalton picked up right where he left in 2011 with solid decision making, accepting what the defense allowed him, while managing his team on long sustained drives. Dalton made it a point to include both AJ Green and tight end Jermaine Gresham. Overall a decent outing for the Bengals' passing game. As expected, BenJarvis Green-Ellis started in the Bengals' backfield. More of a straight line runner, the Law Firm displayed his usual powerful running style with soft hands while excelling in pass blocking. As one of the league's few 3-down running backs, the Law Firm is deserving of upper RB2 value garnering early 4th round consideration. The lowlight for the Bengals were numerous injuries including; starting left guard Travelle Warton, defensive end Carlos Dunlap and middle linebacker Rey Maualuga. Miami 7, Tampa Bay 20 Dolphins David Garrard will be lost for the preseason after undergoing a surgical procedure on his troublesome knee. Stepping in as the Miami starting quarterback was Matt Moore. In my humble opinion Moore is the Rodney Dangerfield of football, brimming with talent, but having played for terrible football teams under constant turmoil. Moore didn't let me down opening the game with two solid drives while delivering the football with velocity and accuracy. Moore carries zero fantasy value due to a lack of team talent at the wide receiver position. After going 14-for-21 with 167 yards and one touchdown, rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill has gained rave reviews in the media postgame reports. Although impressive for a rookie performance, Tannehill's production didn't begin until late in the 3rd quarter against the Bucs 3rd string defense. Don't be ...

What Did We Learn - Week 14 fantasysharks.com Tue 12/13/11 11:08 AM

Guys you can trust to perform at a high level: A.J. Green has been a stud this year. The rookie pass catcher has looked like anything but a rookie, as he's been Andy Dalton's go-to target. Green's five-catch, 59-yard day marked the first time in four weeks that he didn't finish with either 100 yards or a touchdown. The 10th-ranked receiver heading into Week 14, Green faced a tough Houston defense and a head-to-head matchup with Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph. Hopefully, fantasy owners can excuse his hiccup against a top defense and defender, and can get him in their lineups for his juicy matchups with St. Louis and Arizona, both of whom have given up their shares of points to opposing wide receivers. Matthew Stafford has put up numbers all season long. And while his production has certainly dropped off since his early season heroics, he's still been a Top 5 signal caller. With Calvin Johnson out wide and a banged up running game, the Lions have turned Stafford loose, and he's delivered. For the first time since October, Stafford made it through a game without turning the ball over. His 227 passing yards and pair of touchdowns seem fairly modest, but he made throws when he needed to, and looked strong in doing so. Health is always a concern with Stafford, as this is the latest he's ever been healthy, but with matchups against the weak pass defenses of Oakland and San Diego, Stafford will looks to make a statement and secure a playoff spot. Reggie Bush has stepped up in a big way over the past two months, taking on the feature role as rookie Daniel Thomas has stumbled. His Week 14 matchup against Philadelphia proved to be every bit as productive as we'd hoped, as he ran for more than 100 yards once again. The only thing he didn't do was get in the end zone. The coaching change in Miami will have little effect on Bush, as he and Brandon Marshall are really the only playmakers on the roster. He's got some solid matchups coming up, with division foes Buffalo and New England on the schedule ahead. Shonn Greene made an appearance in this space last week. This is surprising, because I have never been a big fan of his. But the New York Jets are now putting an emphasis back on the running game, and Greene has been the focal point. His stat line this past week: 24 carries, 129 yards, one touchdown, three catches, 58 yards. Not bad for a day's work. While I am no fan of Mark Sanchez, or his two short rushing touchdowns, Greene has become the workhorse that...

Corner Lockdown: Week 14 fantasysharks.com Sun 12/11/11 1:06 AM

Running Wild Ever since New York Jets running back Shonn Greene injured his ribs, he's been on a tear. It does help that he has gone up against weaker run defenses the last few weeks, but owners still have to love the fact that he's getting more than 20 carries a game and all goal line opportunities for the Jets. Greene is coming off the best game of his career where he ran for 88 yards and scored three touchdowns at Washington. He's been running with power and hasn't lost a fumble all season. The Jets have been back to their ground-and-pound ways and will continue that trend in Week 14 with Greene being the basis of this game plan. He gets a terrible Kansas City run defense, which has allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to running backs on the season. Start him with confidence as you start your playoff run. I know it's a gamble with Greene sometimes, but he should provide a nice stat line for you as a strong RB2. Things are starting to look bright for Adrian Peterson owners this weekend as it seems that he will be playing in Week 14. He was able to return to practice on Thursday, which is very encouraging news and although Peterson stated that he's only at about 70 percent healthy right now, he does plan on playing against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. High ankle sprains are tough to recover from in just a few weeks, but if anyone can do it, it's certainly Peterson. He seems pretty confident that he'll get the starting nod this weekend, and fantasy owners sure need him as they begin the playoffs. I recommend getting him in your lineups as long as he's playing. Teams have had some success running on Detroit the last few weeks, plus Ndamukong Suh is still suspended, so that bodes well for Peterson and his chances of finding room to run. Keep Toby Gerhart ready just in case, though. Ryan Mathews is one of the hotter running backs in the NFL right now. A large reason for this is because he has finally been able to remain healthy for most of the season, which has paid off for fantasy owners. Mathews has two straight 100-yard rushing games and is also averaging more than seven yards per carry over this span. He's only scored four touchdowns on the season, but has been making up for it with his pass catching ability. He's been quiet catching balls out of the backfield as of late, but that should change against Buffalo this week. The Bills defense is struggling about as much as a team can struggle and they are very poor against the run, so look for Mathews ...

What Did We Learn - Week 13 fantasysharks.com Tue 12/6/11 3:30 AM

Marshawn Lynch is a legit Top 10 running back. Lynch has stepped his game up this season, embracing the feature role on a team no one thought would be able to move the ball. With Tarvaris Jackson providing a modest passing threat, Lynch has chosen not to acknowledge that opposing defenses are stacking the box against him. On Thursday night, he torched the Philadelphia Eagles for 148 yards and a pair of scores, and had it not been for an upset stomach, he might have gone for 200 yards. He's rushed for almost 600 yards in his past five games, with nine touchdowns in his last eight games. He should feast once again next week when the Seahawks host St. Louis, the league's worst rushing defense. Chris Johnson has remembered how to run the football. This may not matter as much for this year, as most teams that drafted Johnson in the first round of their drafts probably didn't do all that great. But it seems that, after weeks of under-achieving, Johnson has broken out once again. Johnson carried the ball 23 times on Sunday, racking up 153 yards and two scores of his own. More important than his numbers this game, however, was his trademark speed and quickness that have returned to him. Johnson makes for a very interesting keeper, and someone who will once again be highly regarded going into next season. If you're lucky enough to have made the playoffs and have Johnson, he has a fantastic schedule remaining, with New Orleans, Indianapolis and Jacksonville ahead. Reggie Bush is now a feature back. Coming into the season, Bush was a mid-round target, slightly more interesting in points per reception leagues. The Miami Dolphins insisted that they thought Bush could be a feature back, but we'd heard that before. Plus they'd drafted Daniel Thomas, who had all the makings of a solid NFL runner. But when Thomas started slow out of the gate, it was Bush who began to solidify his role. In Week 13 against the Oakland Raiders, he ran for 100 yards and a score on 22 carries. And he should have plenty of opportunities to build on that effort, as he faces Philadelphia, Buffalo and New England the next three weeks. Percy Harvin is picking up the slack for Adrian Peterson. With Peterson out the past few weeks, Toby Gerhart has been the starting running back. But it's been Harvin stepping into Peterson's role as a playmaker, lining up in the backfield and taking screens out wide. Those screens act like a long handoff, getting him the ball in space, and allowing him to make ...

Riser and Fallers: Week 13 fantasysharks.com Sat 12/3/11 2:30 PM

Oakland Raiders vs. Miami Dolphins Reggie Bush -- The Dolphins made it extremely clear that they were not satisfied with last year's running game in the 2011 offseason. Ricky Williams was sent packing to Baltimore and Ronnie Brown moved on to the "Super Team" in Philadelphia. The Dolphins brought in new, young blood via free agency and through the draft. Once the Dolphins secured Bush and drafted Daniel Thomas, the new personnel was in place and the new strategy was ready to roll. Bush was going to be used as the complimentary back to Thomas. Isn't it funny how things work out sometimes? Instead of Bush becoming a third-down specialist he's become more or less the featured back in Miami. As a matter of fact, he's just a few carries away from amassing the most rushing yardage he's ever had in one season. Not bad for a change-of-pace back. The question becomes how will Bush's 2011 production impact the Dolphins' purposed game plan moving forward? Thomas has been slowed by hamstring injuries all through the season, and one would think that wouldn't be the case next year. What is going to happen to the Miami running back situation in the long run? This is entirely up to Bush. If he continues on the pace he's on and proves that he was right in saying that the New Orleans Saints underused him, then he would deserve the featured back role. It could be more a lightning-and-thunder situation and less of a thunder-and-lightning formula. As long as coach Tony Sparano continues to use Bush in the" right way" then there is no reason to think that the stats wouldn't continue to come in. If Bush can keep up this pace for the rest of the season and earn the role again in 2012 then dynasty owners of Thomas would lose a ton of value, especially if Bush continues to see goal line touches and even worse, succeeds. I'd look for Bush to continue rolling with about 75 yards rushing and 50 yards receiving with a touchdown and further his already expanded role. Tennessee Titans vs. Buffalo Bills C.J. Spiller -- Not exactly a great showing last week from Spiller. Being a former first-round pick we know the kind of ability and talent that Spiller must have. Neither talent nor ability was demonstrated in way, shape or form in Week, 12, though. Spiller received the best chance he's had to put up big numbers since he was drafted and was stuck on the depth chart behind both Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. Here and now in 2011, Lynch is playing on the opposite side of the country...
