Carlson has won the Vikings' kicker job, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
The team released Kai Forbath on Monday, ending the competition halfway through the preseason. Carlson's status as a fifth-round pick made him the favorite all along, and Forbath probably lost his chance when the rookie nailed a 57-yard field goal and four extra-point attempts in the first week of the preseason. Given the overall strength of his team, Carlson is worth considering as a borderline top-10 kicker. The Vikings tied for eighth in field-goal attempts (38) and ninth in extra-point attempts (39) last season.

Carlson converted his only extra point opportunity and did not attempt a field goal during Saturday's 14-10 preseason loss to the Jaguars.
EDGE Analysis
The largest development for the Carlson didn't even come off his own foot, as veteran Kai Forbath clanked a 41-yard field goal attempt off the upright in the second quarter. The rookie didn't receive many opportunities to generate points, but he could get first crack at field goal opportunities next week against the Seahawks. The two kickers are locked in a position battle and Carlson could have his opportunity to inch ahead after Saturday's developments.

Carlson has been impressive in OTAs as he went 5-of-5 in Tuesday's practice and made a 50-yard attempt, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Carlson will compete with veteran Kai Forbath for the placekicker job. It wold be a surprise if Carlson doesn't win the job since the Vikings used a 2018 fifth-round draft choice on him, but the Vikings also re-signed Forbath in the offseason.

The Vikings selected Carlson in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, 167th overall.
EDGE Analysis
Although the Vikings just re-signed Kai Forbath, they're adding some stiff competition for him by taking Carlson out of Auburn. Carlson is the top kicker in this year's class and had a storied career on The Plains. He took home first-team All-America honors as a senior and leaves Auburn as the SEC's all-time leading scorer. There's a good chance Carlson wins the kicker job in Minnesota and is a fixture there for years to come.
