One of the ideas that's been in the minds of impressionable fantasy owners for who-knows-how-long is that running backs have a breaking point after a certain amount of carries. It's a tiring argument that stems from some very high profile cases including Terrell Davis, Clinton Portis, and Shaun Alexander, who all managed to hit the big 350+ and then fall off the earth the following year. Editor’s Note: If you’re looking for a new, awesome, highly customizable and free option for year-ro[...]Keep on reading: Running Backs with 350+ Carries, the Myth Surrounding Them, and the Lies.

What Did We Learn? - Week 11 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/12/13 7:00 AM

As we look towards the fantasy playoffs, there are two different positions in which you might find yourself: comfort or desperation. If you have between seven and 10 wins, you're probably comfortable, trying to stay the course. Barring a massive injury, you should be a playoff team and in solid position to make a run. If you fit into this category, congratulations. If you have 4-6 wins, you're desperate. You need to win, possibly win out, and given your struggles thus far, you're going to need health (and luck) to be on your side. But don't overthink things. Adrian Peterson and Matt Forte are studs; I don't care if they're playing Baltimore and Seattle, respectively. They're in your lineup. If you have fewer than four wins, I'm sorry. It's going to be next-to-impossible to make the playoffs without something really screwy happening. But you get to play spoiler, knocking your friends out of the playoffs and picking guys up off waivers just to bug people. All of this can be really fun. Whether you're loading up for the playoffs or just trying to fill out your starting roster for this week, you may need a name or two to target. So whose stock is on the rise, and whose has plummeted? Whose Stock is on the Rise? Nick Foles followed up his record-setting Week 9 performance with another solid game in for the Philadelphia Eagles. He threw for just 228 yards, but accounted for three touchdowns, and still hasn't thrown an interception this season. In Philadelphia's up-tempo offense, Foles can put up gaudy numbers. Andre Brown returned to the New York Giants' backfield, and he didn't disappoint. The Giants fed him, too, as Brown carried the ball 30 times for 115 yards and a score. Brown will continue to provide a substantial upgrade over Peyton Hillis and Brandon Jacobs in the running game. I just hope he can stay healthy. The Mark Ingram/ Pierre Thomas combo came up huge for New Orleans on Sunday night. Ingram ran surprisingly well, rushing 14 times for 145 yards and a touchdown. Thomas added 87 yards and a score of his own on his 17 carries. He also scored on a short pass from Drew Brees . Add Darren Sproles and his 88 yards and two scores, and the running backs really seemed to carry the load this week for the Saints. That won't happen every week, but it's not ridiculous to think that all three could be in lineups next week. Riley Cooper has been available in some of my leagues in recent weeks, and he's still on waivers in a lot of leagues. He ...

Rock and a Hard Place - Week 8 fantasysharks.com Fri 10/25/13 6:00 AM

Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Indianapolis, San Diego and Tennessee. They all have byes in Week 8. Chances are there's not a team in your league that isn't affected by a bye this week, and then you add the injuries. Last week, we saw a ridiculous number of injuries to NFL players that are valuable fantasy assets. We're now at a point in the season that will make or break your fantasy hopes. There are a small set of teams that are almost assured of making the playoffs, and there are another small set that have been all but eliminated. But 80 percent of the teams are still alive and this week will be crucial. The next few weeks will make or break a lot of fantasy seasons, and you'll need to be prepared. Below, is a list of players with some upside for Week 8, their matchup, and the percentage of leagues in which he is owned according to our friends at fleaflicker.com . DISCLAIMER The hope is that you don't find yourself in a situation like this. The hope is that you dodge the bullet. But hope won't help you come Sunday. Let's move on to this week's targets, keeping in mind that these aren't every week starters. Instead, these are guys that should only be used if you're in some kind of roster emergency. QB Terrelle Pryor vs. Pittsburgh -- 39 percent. I'm back pounding my Terrelle Pryor drum. Pryor has been a solid fantasy quarterback this season. He's a true dual-threat, and his running ability is the difference between his being a viable fantasy player and a stay-away. He's cut out of the Tim Tebow mold, where it isn't always pretty, but he's effective enough to add value. But he's already better than Tebow ever was. He's playing Pittsburgh this week, and the Steelers are tough against the pass, but I think Pryor's ability to create with his legs could provide a real boost. FantasySharks.com has projected Pryor for 180 yards, a touchdown and 40 rushing yards. I think those numbers are low. Geno Smith at Cincinnati -- 37 percent. If you look at Smith's production this season, he's alternated good weeks and bad weeks. If that trend continues, this week's matchup with the Bengals would actually turn out to be a stinker. But I think there's reason to be optimistic. Smith is coming off a nice game against the rival New England Patriots and the Bengals have been pretty average against fantasy quarterbacks, and I like Smith's mobility. We've projected 200 yards passing, a touchdown and 20 rushing yards. Solid, right? RB Peyton Hillis at Philadelphia -...

Risers and Fallers - Week 7 fantasysharks.com Fri 10/18/13 6:00 AM

Knowshon Moreno - Let's start with full disclosure here, I hate him. No two ways around it. I'm fully in support of LeSean McCoy's "he sucks" comment. Moreno was a full buy-in player in his rookie season when he just missed a 1,000-yard season and pitched in mightily in the receiving game. Then the wheels fell off. Moreno pulled three hamstrings (that's right, three) the following season and then suffered a significant knee injury. Adding insult to literal injury is the fact that Moreno was then arrested in the offseason for DUI. Heading in to this season, rumors swirled around Moreno being supplanted on the roster by rookie Montee Ball and being downright cut from the team. Things have certainly turned around for Moreno as he's been one of the best fantasy producers to date and is coming off a triple touchdown game. Is Moreno an unquestionable top-10 fantasy football running back? This game, and the rest of 2013, could lead us to believe so. If he continues on this pace, there is no doubting a top-10 designation next season. Brandon Jacobs - The new, old New York Giants runner had more than 20 carries last Thursday against the always powerful Chicago defense. He turned those carries into more than 100 yards and two touchdowns. With David Wilson's neck injury looking to bother him for the rest of the season, Jacobs could be in line for about 20 touches a game. It's extremely rare to find a player with such a workload at this point in the season on the waiver wire. The question is: Can Jacobs keep converting those carries into meaningful fantasy stats? Added to the question of Jacobs being able to handle such work at his age, with his offensive line, and his below average speed, is the recent pickup of Peyton Hillis. Will Hillis cut into Jacobs' touches? Will Hillis, more importantly, be utilized in the red zone, all but ending Jacobs' true value? This week will show if Jacobs is for real or just a one-and-done performer. Kyle Rudolph - Last week he had a nine-catch effort for just less than 100 yards with a touchdown. These are the kind of numbers owners were expecting from Rudolph here in 2013. The change at quarterback from Matt Cassel to newly acquired Josh Freeman could either be a blessing or a curse. In his time with Tampa Bay, Freeman leaned heavily on his wide receivers and often overlooked the tight end. There were games where Dallas Clark was effective but more often than not it was the wide receivers who handled the load. That means that ...

Week 7: The Injury Bug Bites fantasysharks.com Thu 10/17/13 9:00 AM

It feels like the injury bug is biting certain teams more than others this season. The New England Patriots have not suited up Rob Gronkowski this season and his return date seems imminent, but still a mystery. Stevan Ridley missed a game, but luckily came back strong in Week 6. After Danny Amendola returned from a Week 1 injury, he appears to have been hurt yet again and his status for Week 7 is up in the air. The Patriots have also suffered injuries to Vince Wilfork and now Jerod Mayo , which will undoubtedly weaken their defensive prowess. The New York Giants' nightmare is winless and nearly "running back-less." With Andre Brown , David Wilson and Da'Rel Scott (now released) injured, Brandon Jacobs was impressive returning to his previous role in Week 6. But there are certainly question marks regarding his ability to carry this heavy of a workload. Lastly, the Atlanta Falcons were regarded as a favorite in the NFC with their high-octane offense and loads of talent. After injuries to Steven Jackson , Roddy White , and now losing Julio Jones for the season, Atlanta's chances this season are beginning to dwindle. Take a dive with me into several attractive matchups for Week 7. Quarterback The Philadelphia Eagles may have a quarterback controversy looming after two straight wins with backup Nick Foles, who has filled in nicely for the injured Michael Vick . In fact, he threw two touchdowns against the New York Giants in Week 4 and tallied four total scores in Week 5. It appears that Foles will be in the saddle again, especially after Michael Vick admitted that he is not near 100 percent in Monday's practice. He will help the Eagles soar again in Week 7 as they welcome the Dallas Cowboys to their nest. Dallas has allowed the most points to opposing quarterbacks, including three 400-plus passing yard performances. Foles battled the Cowboys twice last year and holds a 91.1 quarterback rating against them. However, their offense is higher octane with Chip Kelly than previously with Andy Reid, which should boost Foles' fantasy value. Week 7 Forecast: 250 passing yards, 2 TD Running Back Brandon Jacobs resembled his 2008 self this past weekend. Unfortunately, Jacobs' performance was the only highlight in another defeat for the winless New York Giants. With David Wilson out with a neck injury and Da'Rel Scott suffering a hamstring injury last Thursday, Jacobs should continue to see the bulk of the carries in Week 7 against the Minnesota ...

IDP Waiver Wire - Week 7 fantasysharks.com Tue 10/15/13 8:15 AM

We've hit Week 7 of the 2013 fantasy football season. That means that the season is just about halfway over. It also means that many fantasy owners are ready to find a new hobby. Granted, a slow start to the season can be maddening. Believe me, I know. The first six weeks of the 2013 season have been the worst stretch in my decade-plus of playing the game. You name it, it's gone wrong. The thing is -- you can't panic. In one Individual Defensive Player (IDP)-only league, I'm literally less than five points away from being 4-2 instead of 2-4, and there have been a crapload of points left on my bench. It's a good team that has gotten some bad breaks. I just need to stay the course. So do you, my intrepid readers. The first step in righting the ship is putting that high waiver priority to use, by grabbing one of this week's top IDP pickups. PICKUP OF THE WEEK Von Miller, OLB, Denver For the second time in three weeks, the IDP "Pickup Of The Week" is a player who has no business being on the wire to begin with. However, fantasy owners in shallower leagues may not have wanted to take up a roster spot while Miller served his six-game suspension. That suspension ends this week, with Miller telling Mike Klis of The Denver Post that "he's glad to be back." IDP owners who are able to snatch Miller up will be glad as well, as the third-year pro has top-10 fantasy upside moving forward. WEEK 7 WAIVER WIRE PICKUPS Charles Johnson, DE, Carolina Johnson put up a big fat goose-egg in Week 6, and that combined with a single tackle (a sack) the week before might be enough to get twitchy IDP owners to drop the 27-year-old. If that happens, take advantage of their lack of patience. It's still way too early to give up on Johnson, and slow stretches are a fact of life with most defensive linemen. Johnson still has top-10 upside, just as he did entering the season. Hell, Houston's J.J. Watt put up a doughnut in Week 6, also. Shea McClellin, DE, Chicago This recommendation isn't based as much on what McClellin has done in 2013, as it is on what he might do from here on out. With the interior of the Chicago defensive line ravaged by injuries, the Bears have been forced to move Corey Wootton inside, which, in turn, means an every-down role at end for McClellin. The second-year pro is an athletic player with more than a little talent. With a matchup upcoming against a Washington team that struggled in pass protection last week, McClellin is a serviceable fill-in for ...

Fantasy 411 - Week 7 fantasysharks.com Tue 10/15/13 8:00 AM

The Walking Wounded · It was a tough week to be a Packers' receiver not named Jordy Nelson. If you ask me, every day is a bad day to be named Jordy, but that's a different story. Randall Cobb and James Jones were bit by the injury bug, but the prognosis for the two wideouts is very different. Early reports Monday suggested that Cobb might only be sidelined for two games, but the story changed as the day went on. Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Cobb has a broken fibula in his right leg. There is some dispute about the timetable for his return, but similar injuries have generally sidelined players for 6-8 weeks. The prognosis for Jones is a bit more optimistic. Jones limped away with a sprained PCL in the Pack's victory over the Ravens Sunday. His recovery through the week will determine his availability, but the team is suggesting that he may be able to suit up in Week 7 against the Browns. If Jones can nurse his gimpy knee and get back on the field, he stands to see an up tick in targets as long as Cobb is out. Eddie Lacy has lead a reemergence of the Pack's running game, so the injuries are not as damaging as they might have been in year's past. · Durability has always been the concern when it comes to DeMarco Murray. Murray again proved why he carries the "fragile" moniker on Sunday night when he left the game against the Redskins with a knee injury. The Cowboys are calling the injury a sprained MCL and are leaning against sitting him this week against the Eagles. Murray's reputation and this type of injury generally mean a multiple week absence. The waters are muddy in Big D, so this situation will have to be monitored closely. Lance Dunbar would be a must-start if he could be counted on to go in Week 7 against the Eagles, but he has missed the last two weeks with injuries. Rookie Joseph Randle was unimpressive filling in for Murray, plodding for only nineteen yards on eleven carries. A one-yard touchdown plunge made the numbers look a little more respectable. Randle has the talent to contribute and he looked strong in the preseason but you can't reasonably plug him in to your lineup on the heels of his Week 6 performance. · Even though David Wilson wasn't injured in Week 6, the week has shed additional light on his injury situation. Monday the Giants announced that Wilson had avoided potential season ending neck surgery. Wilson hopes to be back on the field sooner than later, but spinal stenosis is a serious injury that has ...

Da'Rel Scott amassed 21 total yards on five touches before he left with a hamstring injury. David Wilson (neck) was inactive. Two of Eli Manning's first five passes were intercepted (one pick-six). Manning (239 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs, sacked once) tossed three picks in the game, but two of the miscues weren't totally his fault. The G-Men tried to ride Jacobs to a victory, which is the main reason why Manning attempted only 26 passes. The more-balanced attack dragged down the production of Victor Cruz (4-68-0 on five targets) and Hakeem Nicks (4-70-0 on eight targets). Rueben Randle (3-75-1 on five targets) hauled in Manning's only scoring strike. Brandon Myers posted a goose egg for the second time in three weeks. Fantasy Focus -- Chicago Bears: Brandon Marshall (9-87-2 on 11 targets) dropped subtle hints through the Chicago media that he was wanted to be more involved, which explains why the Bears' top receiver was the preferred target of Jay Cutler (262 passing yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, no sacks, 3-20-0 rushing) in this contest. Cutler had little trouble picking apart a soft Giants secondary. With Marshall gobbling up targets, Alshon Jeffery (1-27-0 on five targets; 1-15-0 rushing) followed up a career-best Week 5 outing with a dud performance. Jeffery and Cutler just missed hooking up on a couple of deep throws. Martellus Bennett (6-68-0 on seven ...

10 Names You Should Know - Week 7 fantasysharks.com Mon 10/14/13 6:00 AM

Week 6 of the 2013 fantasy football season kicked off last Thursday with Brandon Jacobs finding the required 1.21 gigawatts to power his DeLorean. While Jacobs was hip to be square, Aqib Talib flexed his hip and his cover skills to blanket the previously unstoppable Jimmy Graham, holding him to zero catches on the day, ruining plenty of fantasy days. Tom Brady pulled off one of the more unlikely comebacks in recent memory while making Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan look like a dude that had something horrible happen to his rug. With Week 6 winding down, there remains only two undefeated teams in the league and they both reside in the AFC West. While the Jags, Bucs and Giants search for that ever elusive first victory, 20 of the 32 teams are .500 or better. There's still plenty of football to be played and nothing has been decided after six weeks. Keep that in mind when it comes to your fantasy team and no matter what your current record is, keep fighting, keep planning ahead and check out the '10 Names You Should Know' for Week 7. Brandon Jacobs, RB NYG The future of David Wilson is very much in doubt, leaving a gaping hole behind a Giants offensive line that actually created a few holes for a change this week. Da'Rel Scott was re-signed by the G-Men last week but he will now be out for awhile with a hamstring injury leaving Jacobs as the last man standing. At this stage in his career, Jacobs is nothing more than a complimentary player and he has no business shouldering 20+ carries a game. Ten days of rest gives Jacobs another chance for a great game in Week 7. So you can choose to sell high or ride the wave until it comes crashing down, which we all know will be much sooner than later. Chris Ogbonnaya, RB CLE You know you spend too much time on fantasy football when your phone auto-corrects to spell Ogbonnaya the right way. Ogbonnaya compiled 85 total yards and a touchdown which will perk a little interest on the waiver wire this week in a desolate running back free agent group. We all know Willis McGahee is not what he used to be and Ogbonnaya is not what we want him to be, but at this point in that Browns offense he could be enough to insert into your lineup and be that spot-starter for your team. Is it a desperation move? Why yes, yes it is, but for those in PPR leagues the fullback/running back hybrid will get you points when you least expect them. Nick Foles, QB PHI It looks like Nick Foles wants to start a quarterback ...
