This was presumed with the injuries to both Jake Moody (ankle) and Matthew Wright (shoulder/back) in consecutive weeks. Carlson was one of the league's worst kickers during the 2023 regular season in terms of extra-point conversion (34 of 39), and he also missed six of his 13 field-goal attempts from 40-plus yards out for the Packers. It'll be interesting to see if the second-year kicker can correct those issues with his second lease on life in the NFL.

The 49ers are expected to elevate Carlson from the practice squad Saturday in advance of Sunday's contest against the Chiefs, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

San Francisco lost Jake Moody to a right high-ankle sprain Week 5 and Matthew Wright to shoulder and back injuries Week 6. The former is in line to miss about one month, while the latter is slated to be placed on injured reserve Saturday, setting up Carlson to be the team's placekicker Sunday and likely a few more contests after that. A sixth-round pick of the Packers in 2023, Carlson got just one campaign as the regular kicker in Green Bay due to frequent misses (27-for-33 on FGAs, 34-for-39 on PATs in 17 regular-season games) and didn't win a job battle out of training camp. He'll have a chance to bounce back working in conjunction with the 49ers offense.

Carlson was waived by the Packers prior to the beginning of the regular season after a shaky rookie year in 2023, but at least on paper, he might have a chance to see game action in 2024 anyway. Accuracy was an issue for Carlson in his rookie season but not Saturday, as he made field goals from 46 and 33 yards as well as his lone extra-point attempt. Carlson remains locked in a competition with Greg Joseph for Green Bay's kicker job, and although the latter has fared a bit better during training camp, Carlson still has the advantage of having been selected by Green Bay in the sixth round of the 2023 draft.

The Packers brought in veteran competition this offseason after Carlson, a 2023 sixth-round pick, missed seven field-goal attempts and six PATs in 19 games (including playoffs) during his rookie campaign. Joseph has made 29 of 31 kicks in practices open to reporters at training camp, while Carlson is 25-for-31. That said, Joseph was also far from spectacular last year, going 24-for-30 on field-goal attempts for the division-rival Vikings -- his third straight year missing at least five FGAs.

Carlson did not miss a kick over his first five games as a professional, but he misfired on six field-goal and five extra-point attempts before the regular season ended, and he tacked on one apiece during the playoffs -- with his final miss providing particularly costly in a game Green Bay lost by three points. The Packers showed enough confidence in Carlson to draft him in the sixth round and hang onto him all season, but he will presumably face some sort of competition for his job leading up to the 2024 campaign.

Carlson made six of the seven extra points he attempted in Sunday's 48-32 wild-card victory over the Cowboys.

Carlson missed five extra-point tries during the regular season, and he misfired once again in Green Bay's playoff opener. Only one of the misses really proved consequential -- four of them plus Sunday's coming in games the Packers won -- but with the games only getting bigger moving forward, Green Bay will undoubtedly be looking for perfection the rest of the way.

EDGE Analysis

Carlson -- in terms of both opportunities and successes -- matched his Week 16 line in Sunday's contest, with the exception being neither of his field goals came from more than 37 yards out. He missed an extra point for the fifth time in his rookie season, but he did record at least nine points for the fourth time in five chances. He and the Packers will close out the regular season versus a Bears team he put eight points on the board against in Week 1.
