We got our first look at the new-look Lakers in Sunday night's preseason opener, and while several key players, including LeBron James and Russell Westbrook, did not play, the exhibition provided a preview of the battle for minutes in the backcourt. All four of Ellington (22 minutes), Talen Horton-Tucker (26), Kendrick Nunn (24) and Malik Monk (21) saw significant action, and all four had some encouraging moments. While Horton-Tucker got the starting nod Sunday, Buha notes that Ellington "is still the projected starter" at shooting guard to begin the season. It's very possible that coach Frank Vogel tries out multiple options throughout the season, but Ellington's track record as a spot-up shooter may position him as the safest choice to complement James and Westbrook on the perimeter. Last season in Detroit, Ellington knocked down 2.5 three-pointers per game at a 42.2 percent clip -- the second-best mark of his 12-year career.

After adding Trevor Ariza, the Lakers added another veteran sharpshooter by agreeing to a one-year deal with Ellington. In his last nine seasons, the 33-year-old has shot above 35.0 percent in every one, including two campaigns where he shot over 42.0 percent. Last year, the journeyman averaged 9.6 points on 42.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
