Lucas decided to retire from professional basketball this offseason and will serve as an assistant coach for the Timberwolves during the 2017-18 campaign, Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 34-year-old Lucas went undrafted out of Oklahoma State in 2005, but enjoyed a long playing career as a reserve guard for six teams over parts of eight seasons. At the tail end of his playing days, he established a strong connection with Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau, with whom he played parts of two seasons in Chicago and another in Minnesota in 2016-17. Lucas will now follow in the footsteps of his father, John Lucas II, himself a former NBA coach, as he transitions into retirement.

Lucas was waived by the Timberwolves on Saturday, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lucas, who was not in the league last year, played in just five games for the Timberwolves. He last played on Nov. 19, and was never able to crack the rotation with the team. Given his age, the 34-year-old point guard will presumably have a hard time getting a look from another team.

Lucas (coach's decision) was inactive during the Timberwolves' 115-108 win over the Suns.
EDGE Analysis
Aside from Ricky Rubio missing five games in November with a hyperextended elbow, the Timberwolves have endured no major injuries this season, which has made Lucas a regular fixture on the inactive list. Even when he suits up, Lucas typically finds himself third or fourth on the depth chart at point guard, keeping him safely outside coach Tom Thibodeau's rigid rotation. Don't expect Lucas to make more than a handful of appearances over the rest of the season.

Lucas played one minute and didn't accrue any statistics in Thursday's 110-86 win over the 76ers.
EDGE Analysis
Lucas has been active for the Wolves' last several games with Brandon Rush (toe) and Shabazz Muhammad (knee) missing time, but since he's still buried on the depth chart at point guard, the veteran has found it difficult to see the court. He's played a grand total of 10 minutes in four appearances this season.

Lucas will make the final 15-man roster for Minnesota, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Lucas will be the fourth point guard on the roster, so he's not likely to get much playing time. Lucas didn't play in the NBA last season, spending time with a team in Puerto Rico and the NBDL.

Lucas saw time in 21 games this season after joining the Pistons in February. Lucas drew some interest from NBA teams during the offseason, but rather than signing an unguaranteed deal, he opted to play China. Once the Chinese season concluded, Lucas returned to the States and signed a 10-day deal with the Pistons, who had just lost Brandon Jennings to a torn Achilles. The former Oklahoma State standout would sign a second 10-day deal before signing with the team for the rest of the season on Feb. 20. Lucas' minutes were sporadic, but he emerged as the primary backup to Reggie Jackson over the final month of the season with Spencer Dinwiddie sidelined due to an ankle injury. Over his last eight games, Lucas averaged 4.4 points and 2.6 assists while shooting just 34.9 percent from the floor. A career journeyman, Lucas will enter the offseason looking to catch on with a team and secure a guaranteed contract. If the 32-year-old is unable to do so, he could again look to play overseas.

Lucas should see a decent amount of minutes Wednesday against the Hornets with Spencer Dinwiddie (ankle) out and Reggie Jackson (illness) is expected to be limited. Lucas played 22 minutes Tuesday after Dinwiddie left the game with a sprained ankle, and it's possible Lucas could play just as much, or more, minutes Wednesday against the Hornets.

Lucas had 15 points (7-11 FG, 1-3 3Pt), three assists, two steals, one rebound and two turnovers in 22 minutes off the bench against Atlanta. Lucas did a nice job in relief of Reggie Jackson, who played just 22 minutes from the starting point guard position. Lucas' minutes were also likely increased because of an ankle sprain suffered by Spencer Dinwiddie after playing just four minutes. If Dinwiddie misses time it could be Lucas who reaps all of the benefits.

Lucas logged 17 minutes off the bench against the Knicks on Friday. He compiled four points and five assists during his short time on the court. Lucas was recently signed on for the rest of the season to provide backup minutes at point guard while the Pistons strive for a spot in the playoffs. Fellow point guard Reggie Jackson will see the lion's share of minutes as the starter while Lucas splits time in reserve with rookie Spencer Dinwiddie.

Lucas signed with the Pistons for the remainder of the season. Lucas will remain with the Pistons for the remainder of the season as they continue to gun for one of the final playoff spots in the East. Lucas had played double-digit minutes in six straight games earlier in the month, but with the recent acquisition of Reggie Jackson, his playing time figures to sharply decline. Jackson and rookie Spencer Dinwiddie will handle most of the point guard duties going forward, as was the case Tuesday against Cleveland when Lucas saw only four minutes off the bench.
