The Hornets declined Bouknight's (knee) fourth-year team option Tuesday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

The 23-year-old is in the midst of a multi-week recovery after undergoing arthroscopic surgery earlier this month on the meniscus in his left knee, but even before the injury surfaced, Bouknight hadn't made a case to stick around in Charlotte on a longer-term basis. Through his first two seasons in the NBA, Bouknight had struggled just to crack the Hornets' rotation, as he's appeared in just 65 games. He's converted at a lowly 35.3 percent clip from the field and 31.6 percent rate from the three-point line while averaging 5.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 12.6 minutes per game for his career.

Booknight will undergo arthroscopic surgery to address a meniscus injury in his left knee Wednesday and will be re-evaluated in four weeks.

While the third-year guard is expected to miss the beginning of the regular season, his absence shouldn't affect Charlotte's rotation much, as he averaged just 15.1 minutes across 34 appearances last season.

Bouknight (knee) won't travel with the team for their upcoming two-game road trip.

He was in need of a big performance, as Bouknight was struggling mightily coming into Thursday. In his previous five games, Bouknight shot just 32.7 percent from the field. With Brandon Miller's Summer League over, Bouknight made the most of his opportunity as the engine of the offense Thursday.

Bouknight notched six points (3-10 FG, 0-5 3Pt, 0-1 FT), three rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes during Friday's 112-109 loss to the Rockets.

Bouknight was disappointing in Friday's loss, managing just six points in 26 minutes. To this point in his career. it's been rough going for Bouknight, struggling to carve out a regular spot in the rotation. Based on what we have seen thus far, there is no reason to think anything will change heading into next season.

Bouknight recorded 22 points (8-16 FG, 6-11 3Pt), six rebounds and four assists over 31 minutes during Friday's 121-91 loss to the Bulls.

With Dennis Smith (illness) and Terry Rozier (foot) both out, among several others, Bouknight came off the bench but still saw over 30 minutes and led the team in scoring with 22 points, a new season high. Given the plethora of injuries for Charlotte, consider this amount of action only temporary for the second-year guard, who has spent a long stretch of this season in the G-League.

Bouknight was recalled from the G League's Greensboro Swarm on Friday.

Bouknight has spent the last week and a half in the G League and has seen plenty of run with the Swarm. While he's had a minimal role for the Hornets in recent weeks, he'll be available for Friday's game against the Mavericks and could see some playing time if Terry Rozier (foot) and Dennis Smith (illness) are sidelined.
