Windler won't play in Wednesday's preseason contest against the 76ers due to a right ankle sprain, Chris Fedor of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Per Fedor, Windler picked up the minor ankle injury at the end of Tuesday's practice, but it isn't expected to be a major issue. However, due to Windler's injury history, the Cavaliers have elected to be cautious with the forward, who's in the mix for a starting job during the 2022-23 campaign. After Wednesday's matchup, Cleveland will have three more exhibition games before opening the regular season against the Raptors on Oct. 19.

Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff lauded Windler's play since returning to the club after Labor Day and suggested he's among the candidates to start at small forward to open 2022-23, Evan Dammarell of SBNation.com reports.

Windler spent some of last season in the G League and averaged under 10 minutes per game with the parent club, but it appears he's made huge strides this offseason and could challenge for a starting gig. Even if he claims a spot, the upgraded Cavs have numerous options ahead of him in the pecking order for usage. Still, it would mean a sizable jump in minutes, and he could creep onto the fantasy radar in some formats.

Windler logged 22 points (8-14 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 4-5 FT), 16 rebounds, three steals and one assist across 38 minutes during Sunday's 120-119 loss to the Long Island Nets.

Despite playing few G League games, Windler continues to show that he is one of its most versatile players when available. He has averaged 14.6 points and 10.3 rebounds this year.

The Cleveland Cavaliers assigned Windler to their G League affiliate after he logged 18 game minutes across his previous four NBA matchups. Eventually, he played against Greensboro on Tuesday and recorded a double-double. Backcourt players Windler and RJ Nembhard will be starting together more often if the former continues to play in G League games.

There was some confusion regarding Windler's status heading into the game. He was initially cleared to play, then some Cavaliers reporters noted that an in-arena announcement indicated that Windler would not, in fact, be available. It turns out that the announcement was apparently incorrect, as Windler entered the game late in the first quarter and went on to see 19 minutes of action -- his most in any game since Nov. 12 against Detroit. When the Cavs are at full strength, Windler is often not in the rotation, but he could see some more looks with Cedi Osman (COVID-19 protocols) and Isaac Okoro (elbow) sidelined.
