Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Thompson was sent to Memphis in early May to stretch back out to start and the results weren't pretty, with the lefty posting a 9.09 ERA and 38:39 K:BB over 32.2 innings. It's not clear at this point whether the Cardinals plan to give him some starts with the big club or put him back in the bullpen where he's had success.

Thompson was optioned Tuesday to Triple-A Memphis, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Thompson had been lit up for five earned runs on four hits and five walks over his last three appearances covering just 2.1 innings. He'll get stretched out in a starting role at Memphis.

These were the first earned runs on Thompson's line through nine appearances this season. The southpaw owns a 1.80 ERA through 10 innings, but his 1.40 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB aren't all that encouraging. He'll likely continue to serve as a middle-relief option.

Thompson was able to get some help as the Cardinals got on the board in the sixth inning and maintained the lead to earn him the win in his sixth appearances this season. The southpaw has done well as a multi-inning option, giving up one unearned run on six hits and four walks while striking out 11 over seven innings this season. He also has a hold. Thompson is the Cardinals' most effective lefty in the bullpen, so he could work his way into some high-leverage spots.

Thompson has pitched six scoreless innings through six Grapefruit League appearances.

He's struck out six while allowing four hits and two walks. Thompson's strong pitching is solidifying his place in the Cardinals' bullpen, though his history as a starter in the minors makes it possible he ends up as a long-relief option. At this point, there's a wide range of outcomes for Thompson, who could ultimately end up as the Cardinals' top left-handed reliever, which could earn him some high-leverage looks in manager Oliver Marmol's matchup-based approach when protecting a lead.

Thompson's MLB debut was a four-inning relief appearance last June, and he followed that up with a five-inning start, but he filled a much more conventional relief role the rest of the way. He finished with an impressive 2.08 ERA, but that came with a sub-par 19.9 percent strikeout rate and 10.3 percent walk rate. Now 25 years old, the lefty could still spend time starting for Triple-A Memphis, but it looks as though he'll be relieving in St. Louis if all goes well.

Thompson allowed a run on one hit and struck out three over 2.1 innings during Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Pirates.

Thompson has been effective in a middle-relief role since he was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Aug. 27. In nine appearances since that date, he's allowed two runs, six hits and six walks while striking out 11 over 12 innings. The southpaw has been an effective part of the Cardinals' bullpen throughout the year with a 2.12 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB in 34 innings across 21 appearances (one start). His ability to handle multi-inning assignments should give him a path to the postseason roster.

Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.

Thompson hasn't pitched in the majors in over a month but will provide an extra arm in the bullpen after Genesis Cabrera was sent down Saturday. Thompson posted a 2.45 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 22 innings over 12 appearances (one start) with the Cardinals earlier in the year and should serve mainly as a middle reliever now that he's back in the big leagues.
