Gurriel will start at first base and bat third in Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 38-year-old will pick up his third start in four games, and he could be headed for regular playing time at first base in the short term after Garrett Cooper (ear) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Even at his advanced age, Gurriel continues to make contact at a high rate, so he could make for a decent source of batting average while he's getting steady playing time. Fantasy managers shouldn't look to him for much power production, however.

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with one homer, one RBI, one run scored and one steal in Tuesday's loss against the Braves.
EDGE Analysis
Gurriel swiped his first bag of the 2023 season Tuesday, taking second base after hitting a single in the second frame. The first baseman also came through in crunch time, clubbing a solo home run in the top of the ninth that brought the Marlins to within three, but they were unable to build momentum and mount a comeback. Though Gurriel is used primarily as a bench option for Miami, he's worth a look in daily formats when in the starting lineup against left-handed pitching considering his extremely low career 9.1% strikeout rate and .191 ISO.

Gurriel will start at first base and bat fifth Wednesday against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
He'll be making his fourth straight start, with the lineup spot opening up by Garrett Cooper (upper leg) sitting out and Avisail Garcia (hamstring) missing his third consecutive game. Gurriel has recorded at least one hit in all six games he's played this season and is sitting on a .981 OPS.

Gurriel had his contract selected by the Marlins on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Gurriel signed a minor-league deal with Miami in early March and is positioned for a bench role to begin the 2023 season.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker indicated Wednesday that Gurriel will primarily be used as a bat off the bench, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Schumaker did say that he feels comfortable deploying Gurriel against both righties and lefties but also went on to confirm that Garrett Cooper will remain the team's primary first baseman. There is very little fantasy appeal in the 2023 outlook of a 38-year-old reserve player who slashed just .242/.288/.360 across 584 regular-season plate appearances in 2022.

Marlins general manager Kim Ng said Sunday that Gurriel "should be there on Thursday," implying his contract will be selected prior to the Marlins' season opener with the Mets that day, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
After drawing limited interest in free agency this winter, Gurriel settled for a minor-league deal with Miami in March and showed well enough in his limited time in the Grapefruit League to earn a spot on the Marlins' big-league roster. The 38-year-old struggled mightily in 2022 with a .242/.288/.360 slash line over 584 plate appearances, but he led all of baseball with a .319 average in 2021. Though he may be able to bounce back in the batting-average department in 2023 if he can stave off any major decline in the career-worst 12.5 percent strikeout rate he sported a season ago, Gurriel's advancing age, paucity of power and poorer team context with the move from Houston to Miami may limit his fantasy appeal largely to NL-only formats.

Gurriel is not a lock to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report.
EDGE Analysis
Jackson and Mish are hearing that the Marlins are currently leaning toward keeping both Jesus Sanchez and Bryan De La Cruz on the roster, leaving only one spot for Gurriel and Jose Iglesias. It's not clear whether Gurriel or Iglesias might have a leg up for a spot. Gurriel, 38, is just 2-for-16 at the plate so far this spring.

Gurriel will be given reps at second and third base in addition to first base, Ely Sussman of FishStripes.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gurriel officially latched on with the Marlins on Friday, and while it's a minor-league contract, he's almost surely in line to make the Opening Day roster. The 38-year-old hasn't made a start at a position other than first base since 2019, but he has plenty of past experience at third and a little at second. Gurriel slashed only .242/.288/.360 for the Astros last season and isn't much of a fantasy option for 2023, even if he gains extra position eligibility.

Gurriel signed a contract with Miami on Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Rumors of a potential deal between the Marlins and Gurriel had been swirling around all offseason. Gurriel had been holding out for a major-league contract, and while the details of the deal are not yet known, the two sides were finally able to iron out an agreement. The veteran first baseman will turn 39 in June and slashed .242/.288/.360 during the regular season last year before spraining his right MCL in Game 5 of the World Series.

Gurriel (knee) and the Marlins remain in touch on a potential minor-league contract, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gurriel had been holding out hope of scoring a guaranteed major-league deal, but it's pretty clear by now that such an offer is not coming his way. The 38-year-old first baseman slashed just .242/.288/.360 over 146 regular-season games with the Astros in 2022 before suffering a sprained right MCL in Game 5 of the World Series. He should be recovered from that injury at this point and still rates as a solid defensive player, but Gurriel doesn't offer much offensive upside steering into the 2023 campaign. He'll turn 39 in June.
