Manager Brandon Hyde said Thursday that Wells is a potential late-season call-up, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

The 29-year-old right-hander struggled his way out of the Orioles' major-league rotation in late July, but he could return as a fresh bullpen arm sometime during the final stretch of regular-season games.

Wells (arm) made two appearances out of the Triple-A Norfolk bullpen last week, covering 1.2 innings while giving up two runs on one hit and two walks before striking out two.

The 29-year-old looks to be healthy again and could rejoin the big club later in September if he strings together a few more quality appearances at Triple-A, but if he returns to Baltimore, he'll likely be deployed as a reliever. Wells owns a 3.80 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 113.2 innings in the majors this season, but he struggled mightily in his first three outings coming out of the All-Star break before being dropped from the rotation and ultimately sent to the minors.

This latest transaction suggests Baltimore is giving Wells a chance to be a part of the big-league bullpen down the stretch, so those who have been stashing him in hopes he rejoins the Orioles' rotation may need to look elsewhere.

Wells was optioned to Bowie in late July as a bit of a reset after getting roughed up in his first three second-half outings. He allowed one run over 3.1 innings in his first start for Bowie this past Saturday and will take the ball for that team again on six days' rest. Cole Irvin is likely starting for the Orioles on Saturday as part of a six-man rotation and it's not a coincidence that he's on the same schedule as Wells, as the hope is the righty will eventually slide back into the big-league rotation. When that could happen, however, remains up in the air.

Wells, who is slated to start for Double-A Bowie on Saturday, will be given a little more rest between his next outings, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.

It sounds like Wells will only go three innings Saturday as the organization hits the reset button. Wells surrendered three runs over 2.2 frames Saturday against the Yankees and has an 11.00 ERA and 8:9 K:BB in three starts since the All-Star break, leading Baltimore to send him to the minors to straighten things out. The right-hander had a 3.18 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 103:24 K:BB across 104.2 innings during the first half of the season, and the Orioles are likely hoping he can quickly regain that form in the minors and rejoin the big-league rotation.

Wells (7-6) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 2.2 innings in an 8-3 loss to the Yankees. He struck out one.

Wells was pulled after throwing 63 pitches Saturday and failed to make it through the third inning. The outing added to an already concerning trend for Wells, who has thrown 4.1 innings and 2.0 innings in his last two appearances. Despite the short start, Wells issued three walks, marking his fifth straight outing allowing multiple walks. Though Wells has faced some of baseball's best offenses in his last three starts in the Dodgers, Rays and Yankees, fantasy managers should be cautious with Wells moving forward, especially considering he's projected to face the Blue Jays next time out.

Wells issued a season-high four walks, and it was just the second time this year he's issued more than two walks in a start. He also hit two batters and was unconventionally wild. Despite the control issues, Wells managed to allow just one hit which happened to be a two-run homer by Yandy Diaz in the fifth inning. He's now gone under five innings in consecutive starts but still holds a career-best 3.65 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 110:30 K:BB in 111 innings and projects for a matchup with the Yankees next weekend.

The loss ended an impressive run for Wells, who'd logged quality starts in five of his previous six outings, posting a 2.97 ERA over that span. Overall, the 28-year-old right-hander sports a 3.54 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP and 105:26 K:BB across 18 starts (106.2 innings) this season. Wells is currently lined up for another tough matchup this weekend against the Rays in Tampa Bay.
