Clippard will no longer be the seventh-inning man for the Yankees, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Clippard has been in a constant struggle throughout the course of the 2017 season, accumulating a 5.24 ERA with five blown saves to his name. Manager Joe Girardi made the decision to move Clippard out of the role he's occupied all season long, and will give fellow relievers Chad Green and Adam Warren more chances in that spot. Clipper will still be used a decent amount for the Yankees, and this move gives him an opportunity to right the ship while pitching in less pressurized situations.

Clippard yielded four runs on three hits and two walks over just one inning in Saturday's loss to the Rangers.

EDGE Analysis

Clippard entered in a game the Yankees trailed 4-1 in the ninth inning, and by the time he walked off the mound, any chance of a comeback was all but gone. The 32-year-old has now given up at least two runs in three consecutive outings and sports an unsightly 14.09 ERA with two blown saves in the month of June. Until he gets back on track, it's possible Clippard won't see as many high-leverage situations for a bit.

Clippard was tagged with the loss Friday against the Rays, after allowing a run on two walks and a hit in one inning.

EDGE Analysis

On the bright side, Clippard struck out the side in his one inning of work to improve his K/9 to an impressive 12.7, but the two walks were uncharacteristic and provided the Rays with the chance to take the lead for good in the eighth inning. With closer Aroldis Chapman (shoulder) expected to miss about a month, Clippard figures to slide into an eighth inning role with the opportunity to be second in the pecking order for saves behind Dellin Betances.

Clippard collected his first save of the season despite allowing two hits (including a home run) and a walk during the ninth inning of Saturday's win over St. Louis. He also struck out three batters.

EDGE Analysis

This was Clippard's first blemish since blowing a save and being saddled with a loss against Baltimore on April 7. He followed up the poor outing with three scoreless innings over four appearances and recorded three holds and three strikeouts leading into Saturday's outing. Clippard is clearly a key cog in the New York bullpen, and his usage in high-leverage situations can help him pile up a few wins and saves to go along with his serviceable ratios and strikeouts. He's worth considering in deep seasonal settings.

With a one run lead entering the seventh inning, manager Joe Girardi turned to Clippard, who will likely occupy a similar role for much of the year setting up Dellin Betances in the eighth and Aroldis Chapman in the ninth when the Yankees need to protect a lead. It wasn't all on him, as an error and sacrifice put a runner on third quickly, but the 32-year-old suffered the decisive blow after yielding a two-run homer to Seth Smith, leaving Clippard responsible for a blown save and taking the loss.

Clippard has two appearances in spring training so far, striking out three in a pair of scoreless innings.

EDGE Analysis

Clippard had a resurgent second half of the season last year following a deadline deal that sent him from Arizona back to the Yankees, and he's looked sharp thus far in the spring. His fantasy value took a hit though following New York's offseason acquisition of closer Aroldis Chapman, which combined with the presence of setup man Dellin Betances, will likely push Clippard to the seventh inning and further down in the pecking order for saves.

Clippard recorded just one out Sunday, allowing a run on three hits in the loss to the Blue Jays.

EDGE Analysis

The Yankees took a 3-2 lead into the home half of the ninth inning, but after walking the lead off batter, regular closer Dellin Betances was removed in favor of Clippard. The 31-year-old got off to a fantastic start in New York after a midseason trade, but after Sunday's blown save, he's now allowed a run in four of his last five appearances and has been responsible for the loss three times in that span. It's possible he's just running out of gas as the season winds down though, and Clippard should be back in a late inning role again in 2017.

Clippard would likely be used in a save situation Wednesday with closer Dellin Betances unavailable, Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network reports.

EDGE Analysis

Betances will be rested Wednesday after pitching three straight days, and Clippard is next in line should the Yankees need to protect a late lead Wednesday night. Clippard has been exceptional since joining the Yankees in late July, allowing just one earned run in 15 innings (0.60 ERA) over 16 appearances.

Clippard was credited with the hold, but the Yankees would go on to concede eight runs in the eighth inning to drop the contest. The 31-year-old has worked to an impressive 1.13 ERA and 9:2 K:BB in eighth innings since being traded to the Yankees, and appears to have settled into a seventh inning role behind Adam Warren and Dellin Betances in the back-end of the New York bullpen.

It's not yet known what the Diamondbacks will receive in return, but it's unlikely the Yankees will ship away a prospect of much significance. The Yankees entered the season with one of the MLB's most fearsome bullpens, but after trading Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman this week for major prospect hauls, the team suddenly finds itself light on reliable veteran relievers. The 31-year-old Clippard should help fill the void in that regard, as he's been one of the most consistently reliable middle-relief men in baseball over the last six seasons, making at least 69 appearances in each campaign and delivering sub-3.00 ERAs in fourth of them. He's regressed a bit so far in 2016, producing a 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 46:15 K:BB ratio across 37.2 innings, but the Yankees believe Clippard's unimpeachable track record carries more weight. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Clippard is slated to serve as the Yankees' seventh-inning man, while young power arms Luis Severino and Chad Green work as the primary setup men for newly-appointed closer Dellin Betances.
