The ERA looks scary, but the right-hander's strikeouts were impressive, and he was able to limit both walks and homers (only one allowed), which are more important indicators than how many inherited runners crossed the plate after he left his spring outings. The Jays have yet to lock in their rotation plans to begin the season, but Roark could catch a break by making his first start April 5 in Texas rather than taking the mound in Yankee Stadium during Toronto's opening series.

A loss of velocity and effectiveness on his two-seamer was a big part of his 2020 struggles, and Roark has made it a priority to avoid a repeat performance. "I just think it got smacked around a little too much last year," Roark said Saturday. "It wasn't moving as much. It was moving very little. Now that I have better feel this year coming into Spring Training and games, I feel like there's no reason I can't have it come back, because I used to have it." His sinker averaged 92.1 mph as recently as 2019, and the right-hander feels he can at least restore the pitch to that level. Roark also changed up his diet in the offseason and lost 10 pounds in an effort to improve his overall fitness. The 34-year-old doesn't have the strikeout upside to be a true fantasy asset, but he could be able to offer some reliable innings in deep formats, especially if the Jays' offense can reward him with wins when he does provide some length.

Roark will not be part of the Blue Jays' AL Wild Card roster.

Back-end starters frequently get dropped from the roster for the postseason, and it's no surprise to see that happen to Roark here. He didn't make a very good case for a spot during his 11 starts, as he stumbled to a 6.80 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP.

Roark was buried by the long ball, as he allowed four home runs in the four innings he pitched. He's now allowed multiple homers in five of his nine starts this season. That's resulted in a 6.41 ERA and an unsightly 3.2 HR/9 across 39.1 frames. He'll have to square off against the Yankees once again in his next outing, currently projected to come Monday.

Roark (2-1) pitched four innings on Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three in the Blue Jays' 7-2 loss to the Yankees. He also walked three batters.

Roark did not factor into the decision and was pulled after throwing just 68 pitches (38 for strikes). While both hits were home runs, Ross Stripling came on in relief and promptly gave up three runs to take the loss. Roark was visibly upset postgame and sounded off to the media. The 33-year-old will next take the mound Wednesday against the Yankees in Buffalo.
