Rainey allowed four runs on four hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning during Tuesday's spring loss to the Cardinals.
EDGE Analysis
Rainey was acquired from the Reds for Tanner Roark in December and his first unofficial outing in a Nationals uniform was forgettable. The hard-throwing right-hander has historically struggled with walks (6.2 BB/9 at Triple-A Louisville in 2018), but that was of no concern Tuesday as he fooled no one and threw 12 total pitches to the seven batters faced.

Rainey was traded from the Reds to the Nationals on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Rainey made his major-league debut in 2018, though he struggled in his small sample size, allowing 19 runs while posting a 7:12 K:BB in seven innings of relief. The 25-year-old fared much better in his first taste of Triple-A, notching a 2.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 65:35 K:BB across 51 innings with Louisville. Rainey has the makings of a future closer -- with a fastball that can touch triple digits -- but he'll need to improve upon his command if he wants to establish himself as a reliable back-end arm.

Rainey was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Rainey made a pair of appearances during his latest stint with the Reds, giving up an incredible 10 runs in a total of just one inning. His season ERA now sits at 24.43 through seven innings. He's given much more reason for optimism at the Triple-A level, though, tossing 28.2 innings with a 1.57 ERA, but even there, his walk rate sits at an untenable 18.3 percent. Austin Brice was recalled in a corresponding move.

The Redsrecalled Rainey from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Cincinnati will bring up a pair of relievers in Rainey and Cody Reed from Triple-A to bolster the bullpen after long reliever Dylan Floro was traded to the Dodgers prior to Wednesday's game against the White Sox. Rainey has previously made six appearances for the Reds, surrendering nine runs on six hits and nine walks over six innings. Those poor numbers will likely force him to settle for a low-leverage relief role while he's up with the big club.

Rainey was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Reds decided to swap Rainey out for a fresh arm in Jesus Reyes after Rainey threw 37 pitches Monday. Rainey has bounced between Triple-A and the majors three times already this season and will likely continue to ride the shuttle, providing depth to the bullpen as needed.

Rainey was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
He has given up seven earned runs in two big-league innings this year, but has been much more successful in 17.2 frames at Triple-A (2.04 ERA, 31 strikeouts). Raisel Iglesias (non-throwing biceps) and Austin Brice (back) were placed on the disabled list as corresponding moves. Look for Rainey to be used in low-leverage situations.

Rainey was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Rainey's stint with Cincinnati lasted only three days after he was summoned from Louisville to provide an extra arm out of the bullpen while Amir Garrett was on the bereavement list. The hard-throwing right-hander should recapture a late-inning role at Louisville, where he had struck out 17 batters in 9.2 scoreless frames prior to his promotion.

Rainey was called up Friday to replace Amir Garrett (bereavement).
EDGE Analysis
Rainey was up briefly in mid-April, allowing seven runs on three hits and five walks in just two innings. He'll likely be up just a few days while Garrett remains on the bereavement list and is unlikely to have much fantasy value.

Rainey was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Friday, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
EDGE Analysis
Rainey was recalled earlier in the week, but his performance in the big leagues was pitiful at best. He allowed seven runs in two innings pitched, prompting the Reds to send him back to the minors for more seasoning. He received lots of praise from manager Bryan Price during spring training, however, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him back in the majors later in the season. To take his spot in the major-league bullpen, Dylan Floro was promoted from Triple-A.

Rainey's contract was selected from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Rainey has just two innings under his belt at the Triple-A level, but he hasn't allowed a run and holds a 5:1 K:BB. He also drew raves reviews from manager Bryan Price during spring training, so it's not surprising to see him in the big leagues already. He should slot into a lower-leverage situations to start, but it's not crazy to think he could find his way into high-leverage situations if he finds success in the majors. Yovani Gallardo was designated for assignment to make room for him on the active roster.
