Even then, the return of Carson Kelly (wrist) complicates matters. That means they need to find a home for catcher Daulton Varsho, whose bat has suddenly erupted. At that point, Arizona could give Smith a larger share of the at-bats at first base, where Christian Walker's .115 ISO, .628 OPS and 22 RBI over 62 games are easily replaceable.

Through 362 plate appearances, Smith has recorded nine homers, 31 RBI, 44 runs scored and a stolen base while maintaining a .265/.323/.419 slash line. He's seen most of his playing time in center field lately, but he can also spell Christian Walker at first base as he did Wednesday.

Smith is not starting Tuesday's game against the Pirates.
