Montgomery allowed just one run in six innings during a no-decision Saturday, working around five hits and two walks while striking out three Cardinals.
EDGE Analysis
The Cubs eventually lost this one in the late innings -- but that was the bullpen, not Montgomery, who logged just 54 strikes in 87 pitches. Saturday's gem lowered his ERA to 3.73, but the southpaw still toes a shaky line of productivity with his 5.6 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9. He'll line up as a risky streamer against the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Montgomery didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's loss to the Giants, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out one over five innings against the Giants.
EDGE Analysis
Montgomery gave up a home run to the first batter he faced and eventually allowed four runs in the first inning in all on four hits and a walk before settling down the rest of the way. The lefty hasn't gone beyond five innings in any of his last three starts, and has just three strikeouts over 10 innings in his past two. Heading into the All-Star break, Montgomery has a 3.91 ERA over 27 appearances (nine starts).

Montgomery (3-3) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings against the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
While this wasn't an especially strong performance, Montgomery continues to be serviceable in a starting role for the Cubs. He's given up 10 runs in his last three outings, but in eight total starts this season (45.2 innings), the 29-year-old has a 2.76 ERA and 32:14 K:BB. Yu Darvish (shoulder) is in a holding pattern in his recovery, and at this point it's fair to wonder if it might be Tyler Chatwood who gets the bump instead of Montgomery once Darvish is ready to return. Montgomery lines up to face the Giants in San Francisco in his final start before the All-Star break.

Montgomery has been confirmed as Friday's starter against the Twins, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
With the possibility that Yu Darvish (triceps) could rejoin the Cubs' rotation this weekend, there was a chance that the Cubs could move Montgomery back to the bullpen, but he will get to make at least one more start. He has a 2.02 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 35.2 innings through six starts this season.

Montgomery gave up four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings Sunday in Cincinnati. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Tyler Chatwood was originally scheduled to make this start, but left the team early Sunday morning when his wife went into labor, so Montgomery stepped in ahead of schedule, but on normal rest. He kept the Reds scoreless until pitcher Michael Lorenzen came in as a pinch hitter and hit solo home run with two outs in the fifth inning. Yu Darvish (triceps) is making a rehab start Monday at Low-A, and could return to the big-league rotation thereafter, so it's possible Montgomery could be headed back to the bullpen. However, he has pitched well enough to stick around if the Cubs are willing to go to a six-man rotation. It is unclear what the team's plan is at this point, but it is worth noting that Montgomery is not considered a lock to make a start next weekend at home against the Twins.

Montgomery will start Sunday against the Reds, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic Chicago reports.
EDGE Analysis
Tyler Chatwood had been scheduled to start but will not be available as his wife is in labor. Montgomery had been preparing for the possibility of his start being moved up a day and will be on full rest, so he should be unaffected by the change. The move will presumably cost Montgomery a two-start week next week, as he had been in line to start both Monday and Saturday.

Montgomery tossed six one-run innings Tuesday in a no-decision against the Dodgers, allowing five hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
EDGE Analysis
Montgomery struggled to throw strikes at times and set a season high in walks, but he worked around trouble to great effect. Unfortunately, he received no run support during his time on the mound and was unable to earn his third victory. Montgomery has been outstanding since entering the starting rotation, allowing just four earned runs across 29.2 total innings in his last five starts. He'll look to continue his recent success Monday against this same Dodgers team.

Montgomery (2-2) took the loss Wednesday as the Cubs fell 1-0 to the Brewers, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over six innings while striking out four.
EDGE Analysis
He threw 53 of 79 pitches for strikes before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, but Montgomery's one real mistake got deposited in the seats by Lorenzo Cain in the third to account for the game's only run. The left-hander's been outstanding since moving into the rotation, giving up only three runs in 23.2 innings (1.14 ERA) with a 14:3 K:BB over four starts, and the Cubs may have a dilemma on their hands once Yu Darvish (triceps) gets healthy. Montgomery will next take the mound Tuesday at home against the Dodgers.

Montgomery (2-1) surrendered one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out one across six innings Friday as he picked up the win against the Pirates.
EDGE Analysis
Montgomery allowed the Pirates to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but he was able to settle down and put together a quality start. In all three starts this season, he's allowed one run or fewer. Montgomery figures to remain in the rotation until Yu Darvish (triceps) returns from injury, which figures to be at least a few more weeks.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon confirmed Montgomery would make his next start Friday against the PIrates, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Yu Darvish has yet to resume throwing since landing on the disabled list May 26 with triceps tendinitis, so Montgomery will be awarded a third straight turn through the rotation. Though he has provided only a 5.33 ERA and 5.3 K/9 while working out of the bullpen this season, Montgomery has dramatically raised his production in his two starts. He has allowed just one run on four hits and one walk over 11.2 innings while striking out nine.
