Mayers was recalled by the Cardinals on Wednesday and will serve in a relief role.
EDGE Analysis
The young right-hander was moved to a permanent relief role earlier this week in hopes of accelerating his path to the majors, and the Cardinals will waste little time giving him an opportunity in the bullpen. Mayers made two appearances as a reliever in an earlier stint this season, allowing two earned runs over four innings, but should continue to see chances in low-leverage situations for the time being. Luke Weaver is still expected to take over Adam Wainwright's (back) spot in the rotation.

Mayers has been permanently moved to a relief role due to the Cardinals' belief that it provides him the best path to the majors, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old right-hander made 15 starts for the Redbirds this season and 86 overall in his minors career, but the move to the bullpen has agreed with him thus far. Mayers has fired five scoreless innings thus far in relief, allowing just two hits and notching six strikeouts. He also made two appearances for the Cardinals this season, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks over four innings.

Mayers was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Mayers was called upon to cover three innings in relief Sunday against the Nationals and wasn't going to be available for the next few days, so he'll head to the minors as the Cardinals bring aboard a fresh arm in Luke Weaver. Should Mayers resurface with the big club in the second half, he likely wouldn't be ticketed for much more than mop-up duty out of the bullpen.

Mayers allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks over three innings in Sunday's 7-2 loss to the Nationals. He also recorded a strikeout.
EDGE Analysis
After starter Carlos Martinez took his share of lumps, Mayers was called upon to eat up some innings in the middle portion of the game. It was the 25-year-old's second appearance since being summoned from Triple-A Memphis on June 25, with the right-hander also having fired an inning against the Diamondbacks last Thursday. Mayers has extensive minor-league starting experience, so he could conceivably be deployed in similar multi-inning fashion on a frequent basis during his time with the big club.

Mayers was called up to the majors from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Mayers made a spot start last July and was lit up for nine runs in 1.1 innings and also came up last season as a September callup. The right-hander impressed during spring training this season, and he was 5-6 with a 3.74 ERA in 14 starts (77 innings) this season with Memphis.

Mayers was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday, Jennifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mayers finished with a sharp 1.64 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 11 spring innings, and the 25-year-old likely made an impression on Cardinals brass. That said, with options remaining and a solid veteran bullpen in place in St. Louis, Mayers's chances of making the team out of spring training were slim to none to begin with. If he can carry his strong performance into the regular season, he'll be a top call-up option should the Cardinals need reinforcements.

Mayers (1-0) fired a pair of shutout innings in Sunday's 7-4 Grapefruit League victory over the Marlins. He also recorded a strikeout.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old righty had a disastrous cup of coffee with the Cardinals late last season, giving up 16 earned runs on 16 hits in just 5.2 innings. However, he's put together a decent body of work over his four minor league seasons, and generated a respectable 3.73 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 89.1 innings at Triple-A Memphis last season. The right-hander is vying for a bullpen spot this spring, and Sunday's effort certainly was good initial step in that direction.

Mayers was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Mayers was solid as a starter for the Redbirds this season, posting a 3.73 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 16 starts, so he'll get another shot at the big league level now that the rosters have expanded. The right-hander's major league debut this summer was a sour one, as he coughed up nine earned runs over an inning and one-third, but he'll look to improve upon that as he enters the St. Louis bullpen for the stretch run.

Cardinals have optioned Mayers to Triple-A Memphis.
EDGE Analysis
A night after getting shelled by the Dodgers, the Cardinals sent the right-hander back to Triple-A Memphis. The 24-year-old was having a fantastic season between Double-A and Triple-A before getting called up, compiling a 2.62 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 86 strikeouts in 106.2 innings. Mayers will head back to Memphis where he will need to work on his command of the strike zone.

Mayers' contract was purchased by the Cardinals on Sunday and will make his major league debut.
EDGE Analysis
Mayers will take the place of Miguel Socolovich (optioned to Triple-A) on the Cardinals 25-man roster, earning his first turn in a major league rotation after posting a 2.94 ERA over nine starts with Triple-A Memphis this season, notching 43 strikeouts, but has struggled with command (19 walks). The move was made following the team's doubleheader Wednesday to allow Carlos Martinez regular rest for his next start, so this will likely be a single start before Mayers returns to the minors.
