However, he'll get an immediate chance to begin building on a respectable rookie 2017 campaign, one that saw him slash .234/.313/.472 with 39 extra-base hits (23 doubles, two triples and 14 home runs). While he's understandably struggled with consistency in his first exposure to big-league pitching this season (.230 average and .330 OBP), Chapman has displayed some nice pop (21 doubles, two triples, 14 homers), considerably raising expectations heading into 2018.

With Oakland playing in a National League park, Ryon Healy will get the nod at third base, hitting fifth, which pushes Chapman to the bench. Chapman should be available as a pinch hitter or defensive replacement.
