Cain was uninspiring but effective enough to keep the Giants in the game. With Johnny Cueto unable to finish his rehab start on Monday, there may be more opportunities yet in the rotation for Cain yet. He hasn't shown anything to suggest he's a better pitcher than his 5.37 ERA, but the Giants aren't exactly swimming in starting pitching options.

Cain will line up for another start Sunday against the Dodgers, Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

After Johnny Cueto (finger) threw a successful bullpen session Tuesday, there was some question whether Cain would draw a second turn during the week after starting in Monday's loss to the Pirates, but he will in fact receive another nod with the Giants opting to give Cueto more time to rest up. Since Cain was lit up for six runs (two earned) while lasting only four innings Monday, he's already sullied the two-start week for fantasy owners, and expecting a rebound performance against one of the league's top offenses might be wishful thinking. Cueto could rejoin the rotation as soon as the Giants' series opener next Monday against the Athletics, which would likely result in Cain moving back to the bullpen.

The Pirates got to Cain early, posting a two-run first inning followed by a four-run second that was punctuated by a three-run blast off the bat of Andrew McCutchen. Cain retired the side in order over the next two frames but was given the hook after tossing 72 pitches through the first four innings. The 32-year-old did nothing to suggest he should rejoin the starting rotation, but with Johnny Cueto still working through his finger blister, Cain could potentially be in line for a weekend start at Dodger Stadium.

Cain gave up three runs on five hits while striking out five Wednesday. He did not factor into the decision in a 5-4 win over Cleveland.

EDGE Analysis

Cain was aggressive against an Indians lineup sans Edwin Encarnacion, throwing 52 of his 79 pitches for strikes. After a brief demotion to the bullpen, the 32-year-old regained a spot in rotation to replace the injured Johnny Cueto (hand). The latter is hopeful he can return off the disabled list when eligible June 24, which could push Cain and his 5.49 ERA back to the bullpen, although the Giants could make a move at the trade deadline that opens up a rotation spot. Either way, the veteran righty is no longer a pitcher to rely on outside of very favorable matchups due to his extremely inconsistent results this season.

With Johnny Cueto (hand) being placed on the disabled list Friday, Cain will rejoin the starting rotation, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

EDGE Analysis

Cain was demoted to the bullpen following Madison Bumgarner's activation from the disabled list, but his stay in the bullpen last just one day. If the current rotation holds, the veteran should take the hill Wednesday against the Indians. Cain owns a 5.56 ERA and 1.70 WHIP on the year, so he won't draw much fantasy interest while he replaces Cueto.

Cain will move to the bullpen when Madison Bumgarner (shoulder) returns from the DL this weekend, CSN Bay Area reports.

EDGE Analysis

Cain posted atrocious numbers over the last month, racking up a 7.55 ERA, 14:13 K:BB, and serving up eight home runs over six starts to derail his 2017 campaign. The veteran right-hander has shown a significant decline over the past few seasons, impelling the Giants to move him out of the rotation last year as well, when he appeared in four games as a middle-reliever. Cain remains a viable starting option in the event of an injury or a spot start, but carries little fantasy value at this point in his career.

Cain (3-8) was battered for five runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.1 innings Tuesday in Detroit. He struck out three.

EDGE Analysis

Cain created some false hope for a bounce-back year by posting a 2.30 ERA in April, but he's gone 1-8 with a 7.00 ERA and a 31:27 K:BB in 12 starts since then, pushing himself well out of fantasy relevance in the vast majority of formats. The veteran righty may pitch his way right out of San Francisco's rotation soon enough, as someone will have to get the boot to make room for Madison Bumgarner's impending return from a shoulder injury, and Cain has been dueling Matt Moore for the title of worst Giants pitcher. For now, he's slated to take the mound Sunday against Miami in the team's final game before the All-Star break.

This is about as good as it gets for the modern-day version of Cain. He has five quality starts in 16 turns this year, and just three since the end of April. Cain has managed more than three strikeouts just once in his last 11 starts, and home runs are a mounting concern. He's a high-risk, low-reward fantasy option.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Cain in June -- he's given up 18 runs and six homers in 18.1 innings this month. His ERA and WHIP now sit at 5.54 and 1.73, respectively, and the underlying numbers offer little hope for a turnaround. His days as a starter may be numbered, although the last-place Giants could just have him continue to eat innings in what is a lost season.

Cain fell to 3-6 on the season with another loss Saturday against the Rockies. He allowed two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings, but he was also tagged for nine hits on 83 pitches.

EDGE Analysis

Although Cain was able to avoid falling victim to the long ball in his outing at Coors Field, it was still another uninspiring start for the veteran. His WHIP now sits at 1.69 and he has just 46 strikeouts in 74.0 innings. Furthermore, Cain hasn't gone deeper than 5.0 innings in any of his last four starts, which further drives down his value. He's lined up to take the ball Thursday in another hitter-friendly park with the Giants traveling east to face the Braves.
