Englert will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher in Monday's game versus Atlanta.

Englert will pick up his first MLB start Monday, but because he hasn't covered more than three innings in any of his 21 appearances on the season, he's unlikely to work deep enough into the contest to qualify for a win. The Tigers are treating Monday's contest as a bullpen day and use a number of relievers after Englert exits the contest.

He's also done a solid job of missing bats, as he now has 16 strikeouts across 16 frames this year.

Englert allowed five runs in an appearance last Tuesday, but outside of that poor outing, he's been a fairly solid long reliever. He should stick in that role for the time being on a Detroit team that doesn't have a ton of other great options.

Englert, who tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in Thursday's loss to the Red Sox, now has a 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP this season.

EDGE Analysis

It's a small sample size of just 5.1 innings, but Englert has looked good out of the bullpen. The righty only has one strikeout, however, so he may not be able to sustain his success if he doesn't miss more bats. Englert is locked into a middle relief role for now, which limits his fantasy appeal, though he could see higher leverage work down the road if he continues to pitch well.

Englert was informed Wednesday that he will be on the Tigers' Opening Day roster, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Englert received a 10-game suspension Tuesday for violating the league's policy on utilizing foreign substances, Chris Halicke of SI.com reports.

The 21-year-old was ejected from his last start May 30 after a foreign substance was detected on his belt, and he's now been handed a 10-game ban. Englert should rejoin Low-A Down East's rotation at the conclusion of the suspension.

Given the year-plus recovery timeline associated with Tommy John procedures, it's likely that Englert misses a decent chunk -- if not all -- of the 2020 season as well. A fourth-round selection in the 2018 first-year player draft, Englert has yet to debut in affiliated ball.
