After San Diego took a two-run lead in the bottom of the eighth, Melancon was called on to close out the game for the fourth time in five days. It wasn't the best performance as Los Angeles had runners on first and second with one out, but Melancon got Albert Pujols to line into a double play to close out the victory. The 36-year-old righty added save number 23 to his league-leading total though a 3.67 FIP compared to a 1.91 ERA suggests Melancon may not be able to sustain this level of performance.

Melancon entered the game in the ninth inning with a two-run lead and while he allowed a home run against pinch hitter Austin Barnes, he still slammed the door en route to his 22nd save of the campaign. The veteran has gone 22-for-25 in save chances this season and owns an excellent 1.97 ERA across 32 innings (31 appearances).

Melancon recorded his league-high 21st save of the season Sunday against the Reds after walking and striking out a batter in a scoreless ninth.

Melancon earned the save Friday against the Mets after tossing a scoreless inning, allowing two hits and fanning three.

The walks have been an issue for Melancon of late, as he has issued five free passes with no strikeouts over his last three outings. Despite the recent struggles, he still owns a 0.71 ERA with 18 saves across 20 chances.

Melancon has now blown two consecutive save opportunities, though it certainly bears mentioning that both chances came in extra innings and that the right-hander has allowed only the inherited runner to score in each instance. There's little reason to think that the Padres have lost any confidence in Melancon given the circumstances of the outings, especially since San Diego has ended up winning both contests. Melancon continues to lead MLB with 17 saves on the season.

Melancon was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the 10th inning. With a runner starting on second, he surrendered a leadoff single. However, he went on to retire the next three batters he faced to record his league-leading 17th save of the campaign. Though he doesn't possess the typical velocity and strikeout upside of an elite closer, Melancon has maintained an exceptional 0.81 ERA and has yet to blow a save opportunity this season.
