Leiter has been confirmed as Friday's starter against the Diamondbacks, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

This will be Leiter's first start in the majors. He is taking Jerad Eickhoff's (back) spot in the rotation. Leiter, who has been working as a starter at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, had a 4.74 ERA and a 12:14 K:BB in 19 innings out of the Phillies' pen earlier this season. It looks like Friday may be a good day to stack Diamondbacks hitters in a daily fantasy lineup.

The Phillies will likely call up Leiter for his first start at the major-league level within the next 24 hours. Tom Eshelman is also a candidate for the bump on Friday, but he is scheduled to pitch at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. During 12 appearances with Philadelphia this season, Leiter has compiled a 4.74 ERA with a 12:14 K:BB in 19 innings of relief work. This start would come due to Jerad Eickhoff's back injury that has placed the right-hander on the disabled list. If Leiter winds up being the man for Friday's contest, he could earn another start with a good outing while Eickhoff recovers.

Leiter was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

The Phillies needed to clear a spot on the roster for starter Ben Lively, and Leiter was the casualty. He will continue to offer organizational bullpen depth at the Triple-A level.

Leiter got just two outs while surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits and a pair of walks in Tuesday's loss to Miami.

Starter Vince Velasquez departed early with an injury, so Leiter entered this game in the second inning. He utterly failed to give the Phillies the length they needed out of him, as he imploded in the third inning, failing to record an out against any of the six batters he faced in that frame. Leiter's current 5.40 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 11:11 K:BB certainly won't help him earn higher-leverage innings.

Leiter allowed two runs on one hit over two innings in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers. He struck out one and walked one.

EDGE Analysis

A Mike Napoli homer accounted for the two runs Leiter allowed. The 2013 22nd round pick was expected to head back to the minors in April, but injuries to Aaron Nola and Jeanmar Gomez have helped him stick around longer than expected. He has a 4.82 ERA and a 7:4 K:BB in 9.1 innings of relief this season.
