Weaver cut short a minor-league appearance Monday due to right forearm soreness, Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

It's believed to be a minor issue, but Weaver will probably be skipped from his next scheduled spring appearance and he is in danger of falling behind the other rotation candidates in Reds camp. The 29-year-old signed a one-year, $2 million contract with Cincinnati in January with an eye toward claiming a starting role.

Weaver is working on using his curveball more frequently this spring, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "Curveball is something that I'm trying to implement more, especially early in counts, and just bring the percentage of it higher," Weaver said.

Last season, Weaver used his four-seam fastball nearly 60 percent of the time and his changeup 26 percent of the time, with the curveball employed on a mere 2.9 percent of his offerings. The fastball didn't fare well -- opposing hitters batted .322 and slugged .471 against it. Weaver is trying to win one of two open rotation slots for the Reds.

Weaver struggled to get going in 2022, logging a 6.56 ERA and 1.82 WHIP between Arizona and Kansas City. While it's unlikely Weaver will return to his 2019 form (2.94 ERA, 1.07 WHIP) he should still be able to contend for a spot in the back end of the Reds' rotation.

The Mariners declined to tender Weaver a contract for 2023, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports.

Once upon a time, Weaver was a headliner in the return for Paul Goldschmidt. Injuries and ineffectiveness mired his time in Arizona, and his struggles continued following a move to Kansas City last season.

He'll likely close out the year in a low-leverage role.

The left-handed Keuchel sports a 9.64 ERA over four outings since taking over as Arizona's fifth starter. If the Diamondbacks decide the Keuchel experiment is not worth extending, Weaver is one candidate to enter the rotation.

Weaver allowed one hit and struck out one over a scoreless ninth inning in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Rockies.

Weaver, who hadn't pitched in five days, posted a third consecutive scoreless outing -- all against Colorado. The one-time starter is settling into a bullpen role for the Diamondbacks in 2022. In six relief appearances, the right-hander has a 4.70 ERA and .343 batting average against over 7.2 innings.

Weaver allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two over one relief inning in Wednesday's 10-4 loss to the Padres.

Weaver needed 36 pitches to get through his inning, which seemingly puts him out of consideration for a start during this weekend's series against Detroit. It was reported earlier this week that the right-hander would be used as a reliever for the immediate future, signaling he wouldn't serve as the team's fifth starter going forward.
