Ultimately, the Cubs fell in 10 innings despite Valbuena's best efforts. The third baseman has had a good season, slashing .253/.336/.434 with eight home runs and 34 RBI.

MLB.com's Peter Gammons reports that the Athletics and Giants are "sifting through" potential options at second base, including Luis Valbuena, Asdrubal Cabrera, Aaron Hill, Martin Prado and Gordon Beckham. With Chase Utley not expected to be traded, the above group is the best of the lot for contenders looking to upgrade at second base. Of the five, only Hill and Beckham list second as their main position. However, all have plenty of experience at the keystone. The D'Backs appear much more willing to deal Hill than Prado.

Luis Valbuena went 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI in a loss to the Marlins on Tuesday. Valbuena had an RBI double in the seventh inning to give the Cubs a short-lived lead, his 18th RBI of the season. He's now had six multi-hit games in his last eight, raising his average to .292. Valbuena is also somewhat surprisingly among the National League leaders with a .391 on-base percentage in what's been a strong offensive season for the 28-year-old.

Luis Valbuena is batting leadoff for the Cubs Sunday. It's the 27th time in his career but just the second time this season that Valbuena has been in the leadoff spot. It makes sense, as he's one of the Cubs' most patient hitters and is also their hottest hitter with a .417/.432/.639 batting line over the last 11 games. Valbuena sports a nice .291/.390/.471 line overall this season.

Luis Valbuena (abdomen) is expected to return to the Cubs starting lineup on Tuesday. He has been dealing with a minor abdominal injury, which shouldn't be a problem moving forward. In his 47 games on the season, Valbuena is hitting .263/.384/.436 with three homers and 12 RBI.

Luis Valbuena is not in Sunday's lineup due to an abdominal injury. The ailment isn't considered serious, so Valbuena should be listed as day-to-day. Mike Olt is at third base and Darwin Barney is at second base Sunday.

Luis Valbuena hit his third homer and walked twice against the Padres on Saturday. He's now halfway to his spring total of six homers. Valbuena, though, has been very solid playing against right-handers, hitting .265 with 11 doubles and 23 walks in 117 at-bats. As thin as the third base market it, he should be a pretty nice piece of trade bait for the Cubs this summer.

Luis Valbuena went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals. Valbuena took Adam Wainwright deep for a two-run blast in the third inning, his second homer of the season. He also doubled in the top of the 12th inning, finishing an elusive triple shy of the cycle. The third baseman is batting .226 with a .738 OPS in 35 games this year.
