Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake indicated Wednesday that the team will wait until after Game 1 of the ALDS to announce whether Gil or Clarke Schmidt will start Game 3, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The club will have both Gil and Schmidt available in relief in Game 1, so it is holding off on naming a Game 3 starter until after the series opener plays out. The Yankees are set to play the winner of the Royals-Orioles wild-card series.

Gil (15-7) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on six hits -- including four home runs -- and a walk over 5.2 innings as the Yankees fell 9-4 to the Pirates. He struck out five.
EDGE Analysis
It's the first time in his career Gil has been taken deep four times, and the only other time in 2024 he's served up multiple homers came back on Apr. 26, when the Brewers socked two off him in a no-decision. It's a rough ending to a brilliant regular season, but the 26-year-old righty still heads into the playoffs with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 171:77 K:BB through 151.2 innings. Gil should have a big role in the Yankees' postseason rotation, but with a bye for the Wild Card Round, it's not yet clear when he'll next take the mound.

Gil (15-6) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings to earn the win over the Athletics on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Gil had his worst start in four outings since he returned from a back injury, but he was still able to pick up his third win in that span. Over his last eight outings, he has a 42:26 K:BB across 38.2 innings, but he's given up a modest 16 runs. Gil now has a 3.27 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 166:76 K:BB over 146 innings through 28 starts this season. His last start of the regular season is projected to be at home versus the Pirates.

Gil (14-6) got the win over the Mariners on Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings.
EDGE Analysis
Gil allowed nine hard-hit balls during Tuesday's outing but only one did any damage, with that being a second-inning solo home run from Jorge Polanco. The righty otherwise was able to limit the damage despite showing some wildness again, walking multiple batters for a seventh straight outing. Gil has now allowed just two runs on 10 hits over his last 16 innings, lowering his ERA to 3.14 to go with a 1.18 WHIP and 161:73 K:BB in 140.2 innings. Gil lines up to make his next start against Oakland this weekend.

Gil allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Gil did well in the contest, but he needed 97 pitches to get through five frames and thus didn't last long enough to pick up a second straight quality start. The right-hander has looked good since returning from a stay on the 15-day injured list, allowing just one run while posting a 12:4 K:BB over 11 innings. That's great news for the Yankees as the postseason looms, as Gil has been one of the team's best starters this year with a 3.18 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 156:70 K:BB over 135.2 frames.

Gil (13-6) earned the win Friday over the Cubs, allowing one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven.
EDGE Analysis
After missing two weeks with lower-back discomfort, Gil was excellent in his return Friday, holding the Cubs to just one hit in the winning effort. It's an encouraging effort from the 26-year-old Gil, who had allowed seven runs over seven innings in two starts prior to his IL stint. He had also issued 16 walks in his previous 17.1 frames. Overall, Gil sports a 3.24 ERA across 130.2 innings this season with a 1.16 WHIP and 151:68 K:BB. He currently lines up for a home matchup with the Royals in his next outing.

The Yankees activated Gil (back) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gil will rejoin the rotation Friday with a start against the Cubs after missing the last two weeks with lower-back discomfort. He went just 3.2 innings but threw 80 pitches in his lone rehab start, so Gil is mostly stretched out. There's been speculation that the Yankees will shift him to relief and perhaps even use him as their closer, but for now Gil will be part of the rotation.

Gil (back) is scheduled to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday against the Cubs, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that the right-hander was likely to return from the injured list this weekend, and Gil is now penciled in for Friday's series opener in Chicago. The 26-year-old threw 80 pitches across 3.2 frames in his lone rehab outing, so he shouldn't have any significant workload limitations in his first start back with New York. With Clarke Schmidt (lat) making his return from the 60-day IL on Saturday, it appears the Yankees will employ a six-man rotation for the near future.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that there's a "very good chance" Gil (back) will rejoin the rotation this weekend against the Cubs, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gil made what's expected to be his lone rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, getting charged with three runs while striking out six over 3.2 frames. He threw 80 pitches in the outing, so the righty should be sufficiently stretched out for a pretty typical workload versus the Cubs. Clarke Schmidt (lat) is also expected back in the rotation this weekend, so the Yankees appear poised to operate with a six-man setup for now. Eventually, one or both of them could be shifted to relief ahead of the postseason.

Gil (back) is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league rehab game Sunday, per MLB.com.
EDGE Analysis
Gil exited his Aug. 20 start against Cleveland after three-plus innings due to lower back discomfort, and he subsequently landed on the 15-day IL. The right-hander has since been able to toss a live batting practice session of around 65 pitches, and he may not require more than one rehab appearance. Gil is eligible to return from the IL on Sept. 6, which would be five days after Sunday's rehab start.
