Cessa signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Reds on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.

Cessa was acquired from the Yankees last season and had a strong campaign between the two clubs with a 2.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 54:19 K:BB over 64.2 innings. The 29-year-old could take on a higher-leverage role for the Reds this season, especially with the departure of Amir Garrett.

Cessa came on in relief of Luis Castillo on Friday night and threw 1.2 scoreless innings to earn his fourth hold of the season.

EDGE Analysis

Since joining the Reds, Cessa has a 1.42 ERA and 0.84 WHIP over 19 innings. He got a little lucky Friday night, allowing a few hard-hit balls, but he's provided everything the Reds have asked since coming over just before the trade deadline.

Cessa (4-2) allowed a walk and nothing more over 1.1 innings, nabbing the victory in Saturday's 7-4 win over the Marlins.

Cessa entered the game with the bases full of Marlins and two outs, but got Lewis Brinson to fly out on one pitch. He then needed just 11 more pitches to get through a full inning of work. The victory is Cessa's first as a member of the Reds.

Cessa and Justin Wilson were acquired by the Reds from the Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named later.

Cessa last pitched for the Yankees on July 22 and picked up a hold with a scoreless frame, and he'll now be heading to a new team. The right-hander has a 2.82 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 31:17 K:BB over 38.1 innings, and he could step into a higher-leverage role given Cincinnati's immense bullpen struggles this season

Cessa (3-1) earned the win Tuesday against the Phillies after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings, walking two and fanning one.

EDGE Analysis

Cessa might have allowed two baserunners, as he walked Bryce Harper in the fifth and Rhys Hoskins in the sixth, but he still got the job done while posting a second straight scoreless outing. The right-hander has been pitching at a high level over the last few weeks, going 3-1 with a 2.60 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP across 17.1 innings in 12 outings since the beginning of June.

Cessa (1-1) lost Sunday at the hands of Boston, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and one walk in the Yankees' 6-5 defeat.

EDGE Analysis

Cessa came on for the 10th inning in a tie game and allowed a two-run single to Xander Bogaerts that ended up being the difference. The run was the first Cessa has allowed in six appearances as he remains a key member of the New York bullpen with a 3.09 ERA.

Cessa has allowed only one earned run across 7.2 innings this season while racking up a 12:5 K:BB.

EDGE Analysis

The right-hander has issued five walks in the early going, but he has also racked up 12 strikeouts across 7.2 frames. That's a surprisingly high number given the fact that Cessa has never averaged a strikeout per inning in any of his five previous big-league seasons. He is primarily used in middle innings, so Cessa isn't a fantasy target despite his strong performance thus far.

Cessa has served up three home runs across 7.1 spring innings, and he has posted a 7.36 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB.

EDGE Analysis

Cessa's K:BB ratio is promising, but he'll need to keep the ball in the park to have a successful season. The right-hander has had issues with the long ball in the past -- he registered a HR/9 of 1.56 or higher three times between 2016 and 2019 before improving to a 0.83 HR/9 last season.

Cessa earned the save in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Mets, retiring the only batter he faced via strikeout.

After the Yankees took a four-run lead on a grand slam by Gary Sanchez in the top of the eighth inning, Jonathan Holder allowed a run in the bottom of the frame. When the Mets subsequently loaded the bases, the Yankees summoned Cessa to get the final out. He worked a 3-2 count to Wilson Ramos before striking the pinch hitter out. The save was the fourth of Cessa's career and first this season. He isn't likely to get many additional chances given the presence of Aroldis Chapman on the roster.
