Watkins tore his Achilles while working out in Arizona on Wednesday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. Watkins, like many other Cubs players, had just recently arrived at the team's minor league complex to get an early start on his workouts. It's a tough development for the 25-year-old Watkins, who was expected to compete for a utility role after batting .246 in 65 at-bats with the big club last season. He figures to miss most, if not all, of the 2015 campaign as a result of the injury.

Watkins was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Friday, Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports. Watkins lost his roster spot on the 40-man due to the additions of both Ryan Lavarnway and Shane Peterson, who were claimed off waivers Friday. He will likely head to the minors if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Watkins is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Reds, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports. Watkins has seen semi-regular duty at second base for the Cubs since joining the squad in late-August, but he'll give way to Chris Valaika on Wednesday. Though he's been an asset in batting average with a .280 mark over his 51 plate appearances, he hasn't shown much of the prowess on the basepaths he demonstrated in the minors just yet.

The Cubs' infield depth had been stretched a little thin with Anthony Rizzo (lower back) unavailable, so Watkins will give the team a bench option across multiple positions. He's unlikely to see many at-bats during his stay with the Cubs, however.

The Cubs optioned Watkins to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports. Watkins was called up to provide infield insurance while Starlin Castro was on the bereavement list, but he will head back to Iowa with Castro set to return to the team Tuesday. Watkins could be called up again when rosters expand Sept. 1.

Watkins was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Bruce Miles of The Daily Herald reports. With Starlin Castro (personal) on the bereavement list and Edwin Jackson (back) heading to the DL, the Cubs called up Watkins, as well as Zach Rosscup from Triple-A. Watkins has not appeared in an MLB game this season but saw time in 27 games for the Cubs in 2013. In 316 Triple-A at-bats, Watkins slashed .256/.329/.364 with 20 doubles, four home runs and 38 RBI.
