Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Iowa ahead of Saturday's start against the Royals, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson had been stretching out as a starter at Triple-A Iowa recently, and he posted a 0.68 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB in 14.2 scoreless innings across his last four outings. The right-hander will make his second major-league start at home against the Royals on Saturday, and he should have the chance to claim a long-term spot in the rotation if his success from the minors carries over to the big leagues. Right-hander Jake Jewell was sent down to make room for Thompson on the active roster.

Manager Dave Ross said Thompson will start Saturday's game versus the Royals, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson was reported as Saturday's expected starter earlier in the week, and the skipper has now confirmed the right-hander will be promoted from Triple-A Iowa to pitch. The 26-year-old posted a 2.21 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 43:22 K:BB over 40.2 innings as a reliever for the Cubs earlier this season, but he's been stretching out as a starter at Triple-A since being demoted in late July. The right-hander didn't surrender a run and allowed only five hits over four outings during his brief time in the minors, and he'll attempt to carry over that success to the majors as the rebuilding Cubs give him a look in the starting rotation.

The Cubs are expected to call up Thompson from Triple-A Iowa to start Saturday's game against the Royals, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Though he has worked out of the bullpen in all but one of his 27 appearances with the Cubs this season, Thompson has been pitching exclusively as a starter since being optioned to Iowa in late July. He built up to 62 pitches in his most recent start for Iowa on Sunday, spinning 4.1 no-hit innings while striking out seven. Expect the Cubs to cap Thompson around 70-to-80 pitches in Saturday's start, assuming he does in fact get the call back to the big leagues. So long as Thompson doesn't completely implode in that outing, he could have a spot in the Chicago rotation for the rest of the season as the rebuilding club auditions the 26-year-old for a full-time starting role in 2022.

The Cubs optioned Thompson to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Meghan Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson struck out two in a scoreless inning Monday. The righty has appeared in 27 games for the Cubs this season, posting a 2.21 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 40.2 innings of work. Kyle Ryan was recalled from Iowa in a corresponding move Tuesday.

Thompson allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two in three innings to earn the save against the Diamondbacks on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson entered Friday's game in the seventh inning with the Cubs leading 8-2. Although he gave up a solo home run to Daulton Varsho in the top of the ninth, he held the Diamondbacks in check to earn his first career save. The right-hander has now posted a 2.27 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 39.2 innings this season, but he likely won't be a consistent source of saves going forward.

Thompson (3-2) allowed a walkoff home run to take the loss Saturday against the Dodgers.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson got the bottom of the ninth inning in a 2-2 game and started the frame on a positive note, retiring the first two batters. However, the righty then served up a solo home run to Cody Bellinger to take his second loss of the season. Thompson has been effective overall for the Cubs with a 1.95 ERA and 30 strikeouts across 27.2 innings, so he should remain in a high-leverage role despite the hiccup.

Thompson allowed an earned run across 2.1 innings of relief in Monday's win over the Padres. He gave up three hits and struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson came into the contest having not allowed a run through his first 15 innings pitched this season, so he was probably due to let someone cross the plate. But the righty still pitched well and owns a spectacular 0.52 ERA. Thompson has given the Cubs valuable length out of the bullpen, as he's retired four or more batters in six of his 10 appearances. Expect the 26-year-old to stick around as long as he's pitching this well.

Thompson (3-1) earned the win in relief Saturday against the Reds after giving up one hit and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson needed just 11 pitches (eight strikes) to get the job done and close out the sixth inning, and while he allowed an unearned run on a double from Tyler Stephenson, he later retired Max Schrock on a popout and struck out Jonathan India. The right-hander has yet to allow an earned run this season.

Thompson pitched two scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's 9-8 extra-inning loss to the Tigers. He allowed one hit and struck out five.
EDGE Analysis
Thompson allowed an unearned run in his last appearance before Saturday to take his first loss, but he's otherwise been stellar for the Cubs. The righty has a 0.00 ERA across 10.1 innings and has struck out seven. Three of Thompson's five appearances have covered at least two innings, so he's been able to give the team some valuable length out of the bullpen. His current role doesn't really put him on the fantasy radar, but the 26-year-old could earn more high-leverage work if he keeps pitching well.

Thompson (1-1) gave up an unearned run on a hit and two walks in two-thirds of an inning in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to Cleveland.
EDGE Analysis
One of Thompson's walks was of the intentional variety to load the bases. He got Cesar Hernandez to pop up for the second out, but Amed Rosario lined a walkoff single to right. Thompson has yet to allow an earned run in his first 8.1 big-league innings. He's posted a 1.56 WHIP and 2:6 K:BB in four appearances and he's likely best suited for low-leverage work as he adjusts to the majors.
