Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Donaldson could get some opportunities to bat leadoff, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. "Guy that controls the strike zone like he does, the ability to get on, power, great hitter...yeah, he's definitely someone I would consider," Boone stated.

Donaldson didn't hit leadoff at all last season with Minnesota, though he did frequently bat second in the order. The veteran finished with an above-average .352 OBP and and an excellent 13.6 percent walk rate, marking the sixth straight season his walk rate was north of 13 percent. Donaldson's patience and eye at the plate lend credence to the notion that he could succeed as a leadoff hitter, though players with his big power and lack of speed aren't typically used in that role.

Donaldson, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Ben Rortvedt were traded from the Twins to the Yankees on Sunday in exchange for Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Donaldson appeared in 135 games with the Twins in 2021, slashing .247/.352/.475 with 26 homers, 73 runs and 72 RBI during that time. After some notable feuds with right-hander Gerrit Cole last year, the two players will become teammates with the Yankees, where Donaldson is in line to serve as the team's starting third baseman. As part of the agreement, the Yankees will take on the remaining $50 million in salary that the 36-year-old is owed across the next two seasons.

The veteran slugger put the Twins on the board in the first inning, launching a 435-foot solo shot to left field. That would be all the run support Minnesota's staff would need in the shutout win. During Donaldson's current five-game hit streak, he has gone 6-for-18 with a a pair of homers and five RBI. His 26 homers and 74 RBI each ranks third on the team in 2021.

Donaldson also hit a sacrifice fly in the contest as part of a productive night at the plate. The veteran upped his season slash line to .251/.351/.480 and now has 24 doubles and 67 RBI to go along with 24 long balls.
