Non-roster right-hander Joel Carreno fanned all three Marlins he faced in his relief appearance Wednesday.
The Mets can send Carreno down without any issue, so that's probably what they'll do. On merit, though, there's a good chance he'll prove to be one of the team's seven best relievers. He's struck out five in 2 1/3 scoreless innings this spring.

Mets signed RHP Joel Carreno to a minor league contract.
The deal also includes an invitation to spring training. The 26-year-old right-hander posted a 2.43 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 90/24 K/BB ratio over 66 2/3 innings between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo this season. He'll compete for a spot in the Mets bullpen.

Joel Carreno was reportedly struck in the head by a line drive Sunday in the Dominican Winter League.
The severity of the injury isn't yet known, but it sounds like Carreno may have suffered damage to his orbital bone. He'll almost certainly be shut down by the Blue Jays for the remainder of the Winter League season and is questionable to be ready for the start of spring training.

Blue Jays sent RHP Joel Carreno outright to Triple-A Buffalo.
It's a little surprising Carreno wasn't claimed off waivers given his career 3.48 ERA with 722 strikeouts over 677 innings in the minors. He should get another shot in the big leagues at some point in 2013.

Blue Jays designated RHP Joel Carreno for assignment.
Carreno posted an ugly 6.14 ERA over 22 innings for the Blue Jays in 2012. The 25-year-old boasts a career 3.48 ERA with 722 strikeouts over 677 innings in the minors, though, so he should receive some interest on waivers.
