Mets signed RHP Jeremy Hefner to a one-year contract. Hefner was non-tendered last week, but the Mets will bring him back aboard for 2014 and help him along in his recovery from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. The right-hander might not pitch all next year.

Mets non-tendered RHP Jeremy Hefner. Another surprise, as Hefner wasn't even arbitration-eligible this winter, but the Mets apparently aren't willing to pay him $500,000 in 2014 as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Tough break for the 26-year-old right-hander.

Jeremy Hefner will soon undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The decision was made after Hefner received a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews. The right-hander will have a partially torn medial collateral ligament repaired during the procedure and can't be counted on for any real production until 2015.

Jeremy Hefner (elbow) will see Dr. James Andrews next Monday for a second opinion. Tommy John surgery was recommended after Hefner met with doctors in New York this week, but he'll meet with Andrews before making a decision. If he goes ahead with the surgery, he will miss most if not all of the 2014 season.

Jeremy Hefner has been recommended Tommy John surgery. It's a tough blow for the Mets and for the 27-year-old right-hander, who will likely miss all of the 2014 season if he indeed goes under the knife. Hefner was placed on the disabled list August 14 with a torn UCL.
