Triolo is expected to be Pittsburgh's regular second baseman after Liover Peguero was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Triolo was projected to for a utility role for much of spring, but he's maintained a .436 wOBA across 39 plate appearances in the exhibition season. His underlying 30.8 percent strikeout rate and .500 BABIP make it clear that Triolo won't enjoy the same success over a larger sample, but he did enough to beat out Peguero for the second base job to begin the regular season.

Triolo is likely to get regular at-bats while playing at multiple positions this season, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports.

Triolo appeared in 54 games in the majors in 2023 and hit .298 across 209 plate appearances. There's significant reason to doubt that performance carries forward, as he posted a .440 BABIP to go along with a 30.1 percent strikeout rate. However, he's an above-average defender at first base, second base and third base, giving him multiple paths to playing time even if he doesn't start regularly at a single position.

Triolo went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored Thursday against the Phillies.

EDGE Analysis

Triolo has settled into a regular utility role around the infield. Since Sept. 9, he's hit .375 (18-for-48) with two home runs, five RBI and 12 runs scored, and he's recorded seven multi-hit performances across 14 starts. The Pirates will have a number of younger infielders vying for playing time to begin 2024, and Triolo may have added his name to the mix with the way he's wrapping up the current campaign.

Triolo went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs in Saturday's 13-12 win against the Reds.

EDGE Analysis

Triolo was a key contributor in the Pirates' comeback from a 9-0 deficit, as he notched a hit and scored a run in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth frames. The rookie infielder finished with the first four-hit game of his career and logged his fourth multi-hit performance over his past six contests. Over that span, he's batting .579 (11-for-19) with two homers, three doubles, three RBI and nine runs scored.

Triolo went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and two total runs scored in Wednesday's 13-7 win over the Cubs.

EDGE Analysis

Triolo has gone 6-for-23 (.261) over eight games since he was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sept. 6. This was his first game with an RBI in that span. The infielder is slashing .271/.350/.340 with two homers, 18 RBI, 21 runs scored and four stolen bases through 163 plate appearances this season. He doesn't have an everyday role, but he can provide cover around the infield for the Pirates.

Triolo was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday.

EDGE Analysis

He's taking the roster spot of the injured Andrew McCutchen (Achilles). Triolo has collected a .664 OPS with home run and three stolen bases over 137 plate appearances during his time with the big club this season. He could see a little action at designated hitter with McCutchen out.

The Pirates optioned Triolo to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

With Ji Hwan Bae (ankle) returning from the injured list Friday, Triolo will end up serving as Pittsburgh's roster casualty. The 25-year-old infielder has slashed .273/.350/.314 across 137 plate appearances since earning his first call up to the majors in late June, and he could be a candidate to return to the Pirates again once rosters expand in September.

Triolo went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Mets.

Getting the start at second base and batting eighth, the 25-year-old rookie swiped both his bags in the sixth inning off the battery of Jose Butto and Francisco Alvarez. Triolo has been fairly productive in August, batting .296 (8-for-27) with a homer and all three of his big-league steals, and the Pirates' plan in the absence of Oneil Cruz (ankle) and Ji Hwan Bae (ankle) appears to be to rotate the young trio of Triolo, Liover Peguero and Alika Williams through the two middle-infield spots.

Ke'Bryan Hayes (back) returned from the 10-day injured list Tuesday and will rejoin the starting lineup Wednesday, so Triolo's run as the Pirates' everyday third baseman appears to be over. While starting all but one of the Pirates' last 28 games, Triolo hit a respectable .268 but otherwise offered little in the way of fantasy production (zero home runs, zero stolen bases, 13 runs and nine RBI).

Triolo went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored Sunday against the Giants.

Triolo extended his hitting streak to nine games with the effort, and he's hit .333 with a .395 on-base percentage in that span. He's reached base consistently across 57 career plate appearances in the majors, though he has only two extra-base hits. Triolo will likely lose out on playing time when Ke'Bryan Hayes (back) is able to return, though it's unclear when that may be.
