Workman was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday, Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports. The Red Sox wasted little time in demoting Workman after he was torched for seven runs on 10 hits over 3.1 innings on Saturday against the Mariners. While Saturday's effort certainly wasn't encouraging, it doesn't look like Workman will stay in the minors for long, as the impending roster expansion on Sept. 1 should allow him to make a quick return back to the major league roster. Workman could even reclaim a rotation spot upon returning, since the Red Sox technically won't need a fifth starter again until September.
